@MightBeUrDaddy8@WW3finalboss That's a 19th century idea. Before the 19th century and the rise of nationalism, a county didn't need to have one people, one language and one culture. Empires and countried with many cultures and languages existed for a long time
There's an exhibit about Marie Antoinette at the V&A museum and they're displaying the guillotine blade I wrote a chapter about in my book.
And I think the sign is a bit too vague, it should be clearer about this likely NOT being the blade that decapitated Marie-Antoinette. 🧵
@FlamenDia1is@UpdatingOnRome That's untrue. The Romans never really venerated their ancestors. And they defenitely were not the same people more than 500 years apart.
1/17 Dated between 560 and 550 BC, the Monteleone Chariot is one of the best preserved chariots of the ancient world. On display at the MET, this marvel of Etruscan art depicts scenes from the life of Achilles.
Today, we explore a special 🧵 of close-up 📸 and History!
This tiny forty-eighth stater is one of the first coins ever made. It was minted in the Kingdom of Lydia sometime between the 630s & 553 BC, making it up to 2,650 years old.
🧵Thread about belfries in Belgium 🇧🇪 and France 🇫🇷.
The belfries of Belgium and France are a collection of historic towers that were primarily built between the 11th and 17th centuries. These structures were originally used as watchtowers, administrative centers, and symbols of civic freedom, particularly in cities with strong municipal governance. Many of them housed bells that were rung to mark time, announce important events, or warn of dangers such as fires or enemy attacks. The UNESCO World Heritage designation covers 56 belfries across northern France and Belgium.

He commissioned a new chapel (in Kortrijk) where he wanted to be buried, but closer to the end of his life he decided he wanted to be buried in Rijsel instead. The Counts' Chapel in Kortrijk is still a sight to see.
One of my upcoming book's main objectives is reminding folks there has always been a vibrant and spectacular ducal, royal and even imperial court life in Brussels since the 13th c.
Under Johanna's reign the Coudenberg Palace in Brussels was really being transformed into a grand palatial complex. She commissioned a great hall, a chapel & additional appartments. Her successors would continue the work and turned the place into one of Europe's grandest palaces
The Great Beguinage of Leuven is such a nice place to go for a walk in.
Quiet, quaint and full of beautiful traditional Flemish architecture. It’s perfect!
