I could have started another golf consumer brand.
A glove.
A training aid.
Apparel.
Some piece of tech.
I deliberately chose not to.
I wanted to build the audience before deciding what to sell them.
Content tells me what golfers care about.
Events show me how they behave.
Partnerships show me what brands need.
Working with founders and operators shows me where the industry is broken. Every piece makes the next one more valuable.
A consumer brand would force me to make a bet on one product.
IGS lets me build the distribution, relationships and intelligence to make dozens of bets over time.
@Seanfrank recently said content is the first and best business because it creates a flywheel.
That clicked with me.
@pray_for_birdie It's not really about what's popular today.
Dave has an eye for building businesses that solve future problems. With the crazy growth of the upper-middle class and the lack of new golf courses, this is a smart move.
I bet he sold out memberships within 30 days.
I spent the week studying one question:
Why would an athlete leave Nike for a company a fraction of Nike’s size? The answer taught me more about the future of golf sponsorships than football.
Tiger.
Bryson.
Equity.
Distribution.
Ownership.
Full breakdown:
Nike’s biggest problem isn’t competition from On or Hoka.
It’s that Nike stopped acting like @Nike.
The brand that made athletes feel dangerous became optimized, overdistributed and predictable.
You can’t spreadsheet your way back to cultural relevance.
My indoor golf membership bet: a standing weekly game beats a pile of unused perks.
Same time. Familiar faces. A reason to return.
𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: which benefit do members actually mention when they renew?
30 intentional range balls > 100 machine-gunned range balls.
Hit one.
Step away.
Pick a target.
Reset.
Hit another.
Practice playing golf.
Not just hitting golf balls.
A golf rule every beginner should know:
You can pick up your ball.
Bad hole?
Group waiting?
Already made a 9?
Pick it up.
Drop near the next tee and keep going.
Nobody from the @USGA is coming to arrest you.
Beginner golfers:
PLAY THE FORWARD TEES.
They’re not the women’s tees.
They’re not embarrassing.
They’re there to make the golf course playable at different distances.
Your ego doesn’t get a GHIN.
One of the fastest ways for a beginner to shoot lower scores:
Stop aiming at every flag.
Aim for the fat part of the green.
The middle of the green is boring.
You know what fun is?
Not making an 8.
Your 7-iron does NOT go 175 yards because you hit one 175 three summers ago.
If it usually carries 145…
Your 7-iron goes 145.
Knowing your real distances is a golf superpower.
