Takeaways from watching every defensive possession Cameron Carr was on-court over Baylor's last 10 games (657 plays):
Role: Helper, but a lower activity one. Baylor's scheme was part of this but not all of it. IF he can up that activity we can see an impact jump.
Popcorn (17 clips): He ~always jumps guarding jumpers. Result: more blocks & more blow bys.
Containment (23): Guards had more success against him. He did better vs Wings & Bigs. He can be too high in his stance and give up angles. His length opens up more chances for successful recovery.
Rotating (14): Baylor switching & playing P&R 2v2 limited opportunities. When there were breakdowns he was late or not active to help on way too many. Poor shell D positioning (low hanging fruit for LA) and poor awareness contributed to that. But when he was in place he was effective deterring and disrupting shots.
Wingspan (11): Stunts, doubles, & ball hawking weak side should be areas he excels. He got a heavy contest on a flipped P&R that was impressive too. The volume here was much lower than I'd like. Tweaks to the rotating above will unlock this.
Screen Nav (10): Some impressive (the Utah clip), more bad. There are opportunities to clean up technique but his high center of gravity & lack of bend will always be a challenge. Baylor switching so often + him not playing POA/Wing Stopper limited volume a lot.
Strength/Center of Gravity (10): If you bump him on your drive (especially if paired with a step back or fadeaway) he struggled to recover. 2 bad charge attempts in here too that could've just been him knowing he wasn't early & walling off instead if he could keep his balance. Some of him crumpling at the rim reminds me of early Hayes. Add weight/strength.
Post Defense (8): Bigs can move him w/how light he is, so he really plays the leverage game w/angles. At the NBA level you worry about a higher % of bigs taking advantage w/spins. But when he stayed on-balance he fared well.
Boxing Out (3): I only grabbed a couple plays here but he's like 60/40 on box out tendencies vs shot watching, which as a Helper can burn you.
And then not included here, but making up like 90% of his possessions, was him chilling weak side corner not needing to rotate or guard on-ball or really do anything. Baylor also switched him off-ball to keep him in that corner & away from the ball in several games.
Overall, I see why he was a 27th %ile defensive impact prospect but also one LA is happy to bet on improving (but Y1-2 will likely be below avg on D). Add strength over time, fix his positioning off-ball, reign in the popcorn machine tendencies a tad, & get on him about boxing out and he has the tools to kick butt. His highlights rock but their frequency needs a big boost for his impact to catch up with the potential.
Fit-wise another Helper is a bad fit on a Luka (Helper)/AR (Chaser ideally) team. Even worse if Bron (Helper) is retained. Rui, Vando, Thiero, & DK each were Helpers too. Though if you clear out 3-4 of those from the roster it's not a concern.
He was not a POA guy on film in any game I watched. Only 2.3 containment related plays per game and most weren't isolations. His screen nav & staying in front of guards will be an issue. But the screen nav is far less of an issue if LA switches everything.
I think he's closer to proficiency as a Wing Stopper than playing POA given how he fared against guards vs wings.
