Bangladesh: As protests continued today, reports of death of nearly 100 people including 14 police officers is extremely concerning.

The state has a duty to create an enabling environment for peaceful assembly. As such, it must take necessary, reasonable and proportionate measures to de-escalate the violence at protests,in order to protect the right to protest.

Amnesty calls upon law enforcement agencies to act with restraint to avoid further serious injury and loss of life. They may only use the minimum level of force necessary to bring a situation under control where doing so is strictly necessary and proportionate. Even in instances where some parts of a protest turn violent, law enforcement must assess the situation on a case-by-case basis with use of force only where absolutely necessary and only against those engaged in violence. It must be strictly proportionate to the situation, which means authorities must not cause more harm than they seek to avert.

Bangladesh: Issuing an Urgent Action for three of the thousands of students who were arrested, @amnesty urges the government of Bangladesh to:

📣Immediately release all protesters who have been unlawfully detained solely for exercising their human rights, including Arif Sohel, Rony Sheikh, and Sabir Rahman

📣Ensure that all protesters arrested for a recognizable offence receive a prompt and fair trial.

📣Immediately grant access to the families and the lawyers of those who have been detained, and ensure that the whereabouts of each person in detention is urgently communicated to their families.

📣End custodial torture and other forms of ill-treatment.

📣Conduct a prompt, thorough, effective, independent, and impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries during the crackdown. Those found responsible for the unlawful use of force must be held accountable.

BANGLADESH 🇧🇩 : The Government must immediately overturn the curfew with a ‘shoot on sight’ order that grants excessive powers to the security forces.

The curfew must be urgently lifted, and all the people detained or arrested solely for exercising their right to protest peacefully should be immediately and unconditionally released.

The BBC Bengali service (@bbcbangla) are reporting that in the early houses of Saturday 20 July, Bangladesh law enforcing authorities (specifically the Detective Branch of the Police) picked up Nahid Islam one of the student coordinators of the quota reform movement from his friend's house and subjected him to "physical and mental torture". Islam, who is now being treated in hospital, is quoted in the article as saying: "At that time I was blindfolded with three to four layers of cloth [over my eyes] and handcuffed. After some time I was taken out of the car and taken to a room in a house. I was interrogated and then subjected to mental and physical torture. At one point I fainted. After that I have no memory," He was released the following day. He said that when he was taken from his friends house, he saw "three-four cars including police and BGB [Border Guard Bangladesh] cars outside the house."

Yesterday, I tweeted a video showing members of the Bangladesh police callously tossing the injured body of Shykh Yamin, a student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). They displayed no respect for human life, and left Yamin to die on the street.

Today, I received another video of the same incident, and I am speechless at the brutality. The police not only tossed Yamin's body from their APC (armored personnel carrier) onto the road, but they also threw him over the road divider in the most inhumane manner. A police force like this deserves to be sanctioned and blacklisted. Its members should never be deployed on any @UNPeacekeeping or receive foreign aid.

A hero who is as brave as the lone protester in Tiananmen Square facing rows of tanks.
