A river that once feared losing its gharials is now welcoming 31 new ones.

In a heartening win for wildlife conservation, 31 gharial hatchlings from the first nest of the 2026 breeding season have been released into Bihar's Gandak River.

The hatchlings emerged from a protected nest near Ratwal Bridge in West Champaran, identified and monitored through joint conservation efforts by the Bihar Forest Department and the Wildlife Trust of India.

Once facing a steep decline in the region, the Gandak River now supports more than 1,000 gharials, making it one of India's most important breeding habitats for the Critically Endangered species.
