Born on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, philosopher, composer, playwright, painter and visionary educationist.
ð¹ 1913: Became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, celebrated for Gitanjali (Song Offerings).
ð¹ 2,000+ songs: His musical composition include the songs that became the national anthem of ð®ð³ India.
ð¹ A visionary educationist: Founded Visva-Bharati, an international centre of learning in India, bringing together students and scholars from around the world to exchange knowledge, ideas and cultures.
ð A Cypriot voice for a Bengali poet
Dr. Iosif S. Iosifidis (Joseph S. Josephides) is a mathematician, economist and poet, and a former President of the Cyprus Writersâ Union and the Cyprus Academy of Sciences. He has translated 70 of Tagoreâs poems into Greek. He describes Tagoreâs poetry as a river so transparent, yet so profoundly deep.
In conversation with High Commissioner Mr. Manish @ManishGIfs , he spoke about why the poetry endures:
ð¹ Simplicity with depth: Children, toys, nature and daily life become doorways to philosophy.
ð¹ Love, light and life: Tagore joins love and freedom to explain what it means to be human.
ð¹ Beyond time: The verses still move readers across languages, cultures and generations.
In a particularly meaningful moment, Dr. Iosifidis recited selected poems of Tagore in English and his own Greek translation, bringing Gurudevâs verses alive for the diplomatic and academic community.
ðïž Tagoreâs Enduring Presence in Cyprus
ð 4 September 2018: Then President Mr. Ram Nath Kovind unveiled a bust of Tagore at the University of Cyprus campus in Nicosia during his State Visit.
ð 7 May 2026: On Tagoreâs 165th birth anniversary, High Commissioner Manish and Rector Prof. Tasos Christofides paid floral tributes at the bust. Dr. Iosifidis then read selected Tagore poems to an audience from the diplomatic and academic communities.
ð From Bengal to Cyprus: a literary bridge across cultures.
As ð®ð³ India and ðšðŸ Cyprus prepare to celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, this literary endeavour brings Tagore's universal message of humanity, love and freedom to Greek-speaking readers.
ð¥ ððððð: Dr. Iosifidis share his fascinating interpretation of Gurudev Tagore, and discover why, for this Cypriot scholar, the poet remains alive through his words. More than a century later, his poetry continues to inspire admirers across the world, including in Cyprus.
