PRAY🙏: A 25-year-old Ugandan pastor was killed hours after participating in a public Christian-Muslim debate where two Muslim women reportedly converted to Christianity.

Witnesses said Pastor Bernard Mulongo was threatened afterward by Imam Hassan Musa, who allegedly told him, "You deserve death" for leading Muslims to Christ.

Later that evening, after a radio interview, armed men on motorcycles stopped Mulongo and his friend. The friend escaped, but Mulongo was captured and later found dead with multiple injuries.

Police are investigating the murder, and Musa is considered a suspect but remains at large. Mulongo is survived by his wife and two young children.

International and Ugandan religious freedom activists are opposing a proposed bill that would institute a nationwide system of Sharia courts in Uganda, as lawmakers rush to pass it before Parliament dissolves on April 24.

According to ADF International, the Qadhis Courts Bill is expected to be formally introduced and sent to committee in the coming days.

The proposed bill raises several concerns. If a Muslim brings a family, custody, or inheritance case before a Qadhis court, any Christian or other non-Muslim involved would lose access to Uganda’s civil courts. Appeals to the High Court would be limited to panels of a Muslim judge and four Muslim scholars, with no further options available.

ADF International also warned about implications for religious conversion, noting that Sharia law does not recognize conversion from Islam. Under the proposed system, Muslims seeking to convert could be prevented from doing so.

Kelsey Zorzi, Director of Advocacy for Global Religious Freedom at ADF International, stated, “Uganda’s proposed Sharia Court bill would subject Christians and other non-Muslims to Islamic law, while undermining fundamentals rights—especially for women, children, and religious converts.”

The bill does not address conflicts between Sharia marriage rules and Uganda’s national laws. The group compared this to Nigeria, where Sharia courts have recognized underage marriage despite a national minimum age of 18, a situation linked to kidnappings, forced conversions, and involuntary marriages of young Christian girls. Furthermore, under Sharia law, women’s testimony carries less weight than men’s, affecting divorce and custody outcomes.
