My unasked-for 2 cents
1) Less kids are “reading for fun” outside of school. (I find the stats devastating!) This impacts things more than school does.
2) The farther secondary ELA gets from “lets read and talk about cool books” the farther it gets from being a *solution.*
Researchers at MIT have questioned whether SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound) actually work. They suggest we might get better outcomes if we make our goals FAST (frequently discussed, ambitious, specific and transparent) not SMART.
After learning about TX sending school tax $$ to Colorado, based on an investigative report from Spectrum News 1 Texas, I wrote a letter asking the Texas House Investigating Committee to open an investigation.
Texas public school tax dollars have been going to the charter school network "Third Future Schools." This network has ties to Mike Miles, the Houston ISD Superintendent, who defends the practice of sending Texas taxes to Colorado. This is unconscionable, and should not be allowed. Our schools are strapped for money, can't pay teachers competitive salaries, and are struggling to do a great job for our kids.
My colleagues and I agree we need to have the Legislature investigate the money that has been transferred out of state through the Third Future School network and any other charter networks that could be doing the same thing. We also need to create a law to keep Texas public school tax dollars here. #txlege
They had 10 weeks to read 5 books. The ones who did are in my top 1/3 and have As. The ones who read 2-3 are in my middle 1/3 and have B or high Cs. And the ones who read 1 or less are in my bottom 1/3rd and failing. See the correlation???
@teachbk Elementary and middle. I would say the workloads are about equal just at different ends. Elementary’s load is at the beginning. And middle schools load is on the other side.
Teacher: What is an honest thing I can tell taxpayers and stakeholders in my school district.
Me: Stupid educational fads and administrative regulations are ultimately wasting your tax dollars and driving down your property values.
@MarvleousMrMcG Boo. Fellow colleague will be ecstatic. The bad news is that tomorrow I have to go visit my sooner friend and she’s so good to rub it in😢
I love #KateWinslet. From the beginning of her career, to absolute the height of her career she was demeaned & belittled for not being exactly what everyone wanted her to be, and yet she persisted knowing her own innate worth above the noise. She really is a vibe.
