Wonderful to reflect on relationships I’ve been able to foster over nearly the last decade in the Bay Area.
Just too early for the available network and virtualization stack but most saw the potential. There may be some similarities with data bottlenecks coming for AI businesses
Agreed it was ultimately a bad business model, but in retrospect, it was a very logical transitional technology, leading to modern SaaS - start with existing on premise software and host it remotely to reduce the bottleneck of internal IT management having to support applications. Two things didn't work business-wise - (1) you can't make money reselling other people's software and (2) we needed true multi-tenancy to be able to make the hosting costs scalable.
