What does it take to build air quality monitoring systems that cities can rely on?
This @NewTelegraph article highlights the Low-Cost Sensor Management Workshop, held during the #AfricaCleanAirForum26 in Pretoria.
It is a timely reflection on why reliable data, local technical capacity and regional collaboration matter for cleaner air across Africa.

ICYMI: Road transport is one of the fastest-growing sources of air pollution in African cities, and at #AfricaCleanAirForum26, the conversation got specific: decarbonisation, e-mobility frameworks, regional standards harmonisation, and how to move from policy to implementation.
July 23, 2026, was the busiest day for commercial air travel ever, according to data from @flightradar24.
A whopping 153,359 commercial flights were tracked worldwide.
Reliable data starts with how it is collected.
At #DSA2026Kampala, our team shared how IoT and low-cost sensors can capture data in the field and enable automated workflows from the point of collection.
The session demonstrated how locally designed sensor systems can make it easier to collect, transmit and process data supporting solutions designed for local needs and conditions across Africa
More than 100 experts and national organisations, including senior clinicians, public health experts, scientists, education leaders, trade unions, and parent organisations, backed Safe Air Schools’ call for this guidance to be updated.

Weather Forecast for 19th to 25th May 2026
🌧️Rainfall is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast and some parts of the Southeastern Lowlands and Northeastern Kenya.
The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley:
Sunny intervals are expected in the mornings though rains may occur over few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places occasionally spreading to several places. Nights are likely to be partly cloudy, but showers may occur over few places.
North-western Kenya:
Sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night. However, morning rains may occur over few places.
The Highlands East of the Rift Valley:
Mornings are likely to be cloudy breaking into sunny intervals. Afternoon showers are expected over few places. Nights are likely to be partly cloudy, but showers may occur over few places.
North-eastern Kenya:
Sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night. However, morning rains may occur over few places.
The South-eastern lowlands:
Sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night. However, afternoon showers may occur over few places.
The Coast:
Sunny intervals are expected during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night. However, morning and night showers may occur over few places.
Air quality monitoring is not only about deploying sensors. It is about generating reliable, accessible data that helps researchers, communities and decision-makers understand #AirPollution and act on it.
In Manhiça, Mozambique 🇲🇿, AirQo is supporting @Manhica_CISM with monitoring infrastructure, including Binos monitors and a reference monitor data logger, to enable remote access to high-resolution #AirQuality data and strengthen network reliability.
For African cities, this kind of local evidence is essential to inform planning, protect health and accelerate policy action on #CleanAir.

Lowering the quality or specifications of fuel (e.g., allowing higher sulfur content, lower octane/cetane ratings, excess additives like manganese, more contaminants or adulterants) and then using it in cars designed for higher-standard fuel can cause a range of short-term and long-term problems.
Modern cars are not built for compromised fuel. The moment you lower standards you’re setting people up to fail without telling them.

🔬 #DYK what PM₂.₅ is and why it matters?
PM₂.₅ are tiny particles 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair. They come straight from vehicle exhausts and can travel deep into your lungs and bloodstream.
Long-term exposure can lead to:
🔹Asthma
🔹Heart disease
🔹 Lung infections
Cleaner transport choices reduce PM₂.₅ levels in our communities.
