Web3 gaming is dead.
Not struggling. Not pivoting. Dead.
90% of projects collapsed. Billions vanished. "Play-to-earn" economies lasted weeks. The player base didn't churn. it evaporated.
Why?
Simple: it was never really about games.
The original ideas were genuinely good, persistent ownership, player-driven economies, assets that outlive a single title. Solid concepts.
But that's not what got built.
What got built was a financial product wearing a game as a costume. Tokens needed justification. Progression became extraction. Players became liquidity. The whole system depended on new money arriving faster than old money left. the textbook definition of a scam.
Gamers saw it immediately. Not because they don't understand new tech but because they've watched monetization models bleed their spaces dry for a decade. They knew exactly what it was.
The tragedy? The underlying tech was actually solid. Persistent identity across games. Progression that doesn't disappear when a server shuts down. Economies not fully controlled by one publisher. Real, useful infrastructure.
It just should have been invisible in the plumbing, not on the box.
No wallets in onboarding. No tokens in the core loop. No speculation dressed up as gameplay. Just better, more persistent gaming experiences โ that players would have loved without ever knowing why.
Greed ruined it. Again.
