I was an ableist asshole when I first became a teacher. Because that’s what I was taught! In my defense, academic institutions told me a strict attendance policy was required. What changed my perspective & my assessment criteria? Disabled students 🧵
This is incredible to me. Mr. Wong is the inventor of this air purifier. He had to convince his daughter’s school to accept his donations. These devices will not only protect his daughter, as their protection extends to everyone in the classroom. Also note that HEPA filtration is safe and not an ozone-producing form of filtration. FYI, Mr. Wong’s units actually clean the air, at a very high CADR [rate] and low decibels [noise levels], an even higher rate and quieter than Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes.
Every classroom across the globe should be using these or comparable localized filtration devices, because they reduce illness-related absences (by minimizing circulating airborne pathogens), and kids who are healthier and attend more school have better engagement. Cleaning shared indoor spaces is essential.
We are also still fighting Covid despite the lack of government transparency and horrendous media coverage. It’s primarily a vascular disease caused by an airborne virus with an acute and chronic phase, and it must be mitigated.
Pretending that the release of a biohazard that changed the world forever just disappeared, ignoring the ongoing damage as it continues to erode our defenses and harm everyone—especially kids who never consented to being infected 1-2 times per year, from K-12 and through college—is a massive failure. Gaslighting parents into thinking this is 'just the way it always was' is cruel and negligent. Our children deserve better protection, transparency, and accountability. They deserve clean air.
Please pass on the message to your local school districts. Too many people still don’t understand how to clean the air and why these devices are needed.
Conflicts of interest:
No financial COI.
As a consumer, I own several Levoit HEPA filters in my house. As a parent, I’ve been pushing our local district to use purifiers since children returned from remote learning. My offers to donate devices were also turned down. As a scientist who studies health technology, I’ll never understand the resistance to using these life-saving tools. They help achieve everyone’s bottom line: they keep butts in seats.

@DamienHaas P.S: I realise yours could've been a throwaway comment, but still. :) Also, depending on how good you're feeling about yourself, "fine" would be true in this context whichever inflection you choose to apply to it.
@DamienHaas Echoing the sentiments of pretty much everyone else...you're absolutely fine just as you are. Imagine if we had to transform ourselves literally everytime - how'd I even grow tentacles to cosplay Ursula?! It's sad that culturally we view "muscled" bodies any differently.
@wonderartsy I got the answer!Here's the exact response I got from a @3M representative:
"Ans) 1 Filtering Efficiency
FFP2- 94%
FFP3- 99.5%
Ans) 2 Any 3M disposable respirator protects against Dust, Mist, Fumes, Smoke and Bio-aerosols(Bacteria, Viruses etc)"

@wonderartsy I've been looking for this info but can't find anything that states categorically one way or another - as long as a mask is certified N95/FFP2 or N99/FFP3, does it matter if the usage recommendations/packaging states industrial/pollution/healthcare or whatever else? Any idea?

@ravenscimaven Do you know if it matters what the mask packaging says the recommended usage is (pollution/industrial/healthcare etc. )? An N95/FFP2 or N99/FFP3 certified mask should have the same filtration capacity regardless of what environment I use it in, right?

Melbourne: Marxism Conference over the Easter weekend. A big thank you to everyone who has made the connection between COVID-19, class, disability, Long Covid, and poverty. Solidarity and mutual aid are important in this ongoing pandemic😷💚 #MaskUp#CovidIsAirborne

PSA: In case anyone was wondering, I finally have a categorical answer for whether it matters what the packaging says the use is for (pollution, industrial, etc.). The efficacy of N95/FFP2 and N99/FFP3 remains the same. They all protect against biological particles.

@drseanmullen "Protection isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition." It's so hard to understand how this isn't common sense. I'm genuinely trying to understand how people make decisions because reason/logic isn't it. That's a paradigm shift for me in terms of how I make sense of the world.
