But if we’re demanding real transparency and accountability on billions in taxpayer money flowing to connected interests, let’s apply the exact same standard to the hundreds of billions spent on climate change and green programs over the last decade.
Federally, the government has stated it invested over $100 billion since 2015 on climate action and clean growth. Broader tallies (including commitments, incentives, and programs across departments) put total federal climate-related spending in the $170–200+ billion range.
Provincially and territorially, estimates for climate and green economy programs exceed $300 billion across hundreds of initiatives. Even a conservative analysis limited to the federal government plus just the four largest provinces (Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, and BC) shows roughly $158 billion spent from 2014/15 to 2024/25 on green economy programs, investments, and tax incentives.
That’s tens of times larger than the condo bailout — with far less scrutiny on where the money actually went, who benefited, and what emissions reductions were delivered.
Can we get full transparency, independent audits, and the same level of oversight on this spending too?
