There is talk that Algeria is behind today’s joint attack by the FAL and JNIM against the FAMa. However, this is not entirely true. 🇲🇱🇩🇿
Moroccan and pro-Moroccan activists have claimed that the offensive by Tuaregs and jihadists was supported by Algeria in response to Mali’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the occupied Western Sahara a few days ago 🇲🇦🇪🇭. Nevertheless, attacks by Tuaregs and JNIM have been occurring intermittently in Mali over the past two years. Despite the 2023 offensive in northern Mali, neither the armed forces nor the support of the Wagner PMC have been sufficient to keep rebel forces and terrorist militants at bay. While Algeria supports the Tuareg forces, its support is limited given the nationalist and identity-related issues that an independent Azawad would pose for southern Algerian territory, not to mention the spread of JNIM or ISGS into Algerian territory. The strengthening of these groups coincides with Russia’s entry into Mali, with these groups serving as tools for France and NATO—which have been ousted—to wrest influence from Moscow over a country rich in natural and energy resources (Gold, Uranium, especially) and situated in a transit zone between the Gulf of Guinea and the Maghreb. Ukraine, just as it did in Sudan, has also intervened in this support for the Tuareg rebels against Russian troops. 🇺🇦🇫🇷🇷🇺
The goal is to drive Russia out, but the question is how the Malian people will accept the French presence, which is unpopular not only because of France’s colonial past (and neocolonial present) but also because France has been unable to resolve the insurgency problem, let alone maintain a limited Malian army.

Regarding the events in Blida. I would wait for the official government release. Algeria doesn’t hide terror events within the country and there is no “information blackout “ regarding this. If it was terrorism, the Algerian armed forces would unleash hell on that entire group

Earlier today, the Algerian ministry of defence announced it has killed 3 Moroccan citizens and arrested a 4th for drug trafficking in the Bechar province and has seized 74kg of cannabis , rifle, binoculars , and mobile phones

Algeria defence budget for 2026 will be 25 billion USD. This is in line with regional context and security tensions/concerns at the border. Majority of this will be spent on modernization of equipment

There are similar calls for protest in Algeria on October 3rd however I do not think that these will materialize into anything. The same movement in Morocco(Genz212) calling for it in Algeria is GENZ213

Moroccan security forces have appeared to use live ammunition against protesters. Reportedly used in “self defence” after these protestors tried to seize weapons. Protests in Morocco have erupted calling for better healthcare and education

To French diplomatic buildings for a very low price. The French embassy and consulate currently owns a lot of land at a discount preferred price that is not provided to the Algerian embassy/consulate in France. Algiers invites a French delegation to begin discussing this matter

Following France decision to “suspend” an agreement signed in 2013 with Algeria for visa free entry for diplomatic passport holders. Algeria has officially terminated the agreement and in addition has notified the French government that it will no longer be providing real estate

But Algeria doesn’t see itself as a direct participant. Secondly, Algiers would want in some ways public declaration by Moroccan leaders to recognize Bechar and Tindouf as Algerian regions and not claim them as Moroccan but none of this is going to happen

Personally I doubt there will be normalization anytime soon. Especially in the context that Morocco has normalized with Israel and any serious normalization talk between 🇩🇿🇲🇦 will involve that. Morocco would want to discuss about Western Sahara

Yesterday the King of Morocco stated in an address that the Algerian people are brotherly and proposed a meeting with Algerian leaders to meet and discuss normalization in a compromise where “nobody will be a loser , a win win situation “
