Crazy number of sim swaps happening in crypto again.
What's a sim swap?
An exploiter transfers your phone number to a phone they control gaining access to any account (e.g. social media, exchange accounts) secured by your phone number (e.g. 2 factor SMS, password recovery).
How do they do it?
They find your number somewhere, then social engineer their way into getting your mobile carrier to transfer the number to a different sim.
How do you protect yourself?
You can ask you carrier to add a PIN pw to further secure your account but this often fail through sloppy enforcement.
How do you actually protect yourself?
Use google auth rather than SMS 2 factor SMS on all accounts. Remove mobile password restore on all major accounts. Use a carrier like GoogleFI with Google Advanced Protection to require physical FIDO key for account changes.
Can carriers fix this?
Yes! Remove the social engineering security hole! All carriers should create an advanced protection setting that requires physical FIDO key authentication (or similar) for account changes. This risk will remain until they do.
The philosophical problem of rwa and onchain representation is best described by “this is not a pipe” artwork
At some point u need to trust some oracle which defeats the point of decentralization
Cryptography can deal with bits not rwa just yet, zk isn’t a solution atm either
@compoundfinance Please see the Court Order dated April 25, 2023 in True Return Systems, LLC v. Compound Protocol, No. 22-cv-08483 (S.D.N.Y. filed Oct. 5, 2022).
@MattauQ True. And we don't think that DAO's (voting, profit expectation, financials, distributions) operations through a ledger make them legally indecipherable or immune. Lots of legal analogues, especially at @MakerDAO "real world" & @compoundfinance "treasury". https://t.co/4xBl6E2D68
@edzitron Crypto-maximalists believe they're changing the world and more rapid code releases is better, and mainstream finance/media are missing the implications b/c devastating hacks are a weekly occurrence. #DeFi@Ronin_Network
@smdiehl@jimmy_wales@johnmcternan@ncweaver Yes, and if code is law, which code applies? Odds are a protocol is operating with the released and approved code. https://t.co/lIIzoEL5ix
Patent protection will become increasingly important for DeFi projects as regulation advances. Regulation will increase costs and lengthen launch times from weeks to months or years. IP is becoming an organizational necessity to protect capital investment and user experience.
