One possibility is to think of multiplication by -1 as 180° rotation in a 2D plane (instead of mere reflection along a 1D line). Then solving for the Nth roots of -1 becomes intuitive (fractional rotations!) and it turns out the complex numbers solve/contain all of them!

Is there a intuitive rationale for the necessity of the complex numbers to exist? Saying "we needed to solve x^2=-1" is a bit short, why not "x+1=x" ?
