Dear Mr. President,

I am writing this open letter regarding the October 2023 shocking physical attack on the ADB officer who was head of the Bank’s office in Ethiopia and who enjoyed diplomatic privileges in carrying out his official duties. Notwithstanding your requests for
explanation and enquiries by Ambassadors in Addis Ababa representing certain non-regional shareholders of the Bank, the government of Ethiopia has apparently not offered a substantive response. Unsurprisingly, the attack and the government’s silence for nearly three months now has soured relations between the Bank and the country.

As a former Ethiopian staff member who had the good fortune to work at the institution for more than a decade and half, I have been deeply saddened by what appears to be a deliberate act of egregious atrocity reminiscent of the conduct of gangs and crime syndicates. It was plainly wrong. And singularly shameful.
I understand that the perpetrators and those behind them have not been named. The fact that the assault took place not in some remote and inaccessible corner of the land but right under the noses of the country’s rulers might lead observers to conclude that a not insignificant burden of accountability rests squarely upon their shoulders.

Inevitably, the incident casts an unsettling shadow on what has long been an amicable and productive bond between the Bank and Ethiopia. As you know, it was in Addis Ababa, and more precisely in ECA’s Africa Hall, that the ADB came to life; following a study commissioned by the Executive Secretary of the organization and carried out by Hans Singer, the well-known British economist, that established the feasibility of the idea. The subsequent role played by Ethiopia’s finance officials at the time (particularly Ato Menassie Lemma and Lij Yewondwossen Mengesha, Governor and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, respectively) in mobilizing their counterparts from the newly independent sister countries of the continent and in devising the mechanism for the project’s realization was an inspiration to all (including young African professionals like me at the ECA) who were privileged to witness the consequential event.

It is the country’s current rulers who, under normal circumstances, would have the primary duty to recall the history of this cherished event and to draw the right lessons for their policies. Regrettably, they do not appear inclined to do so, which means that they are unlikely to find remedies for the present impasse. They are too pre-occupied with their goal of recasting the country in their own image, for which they could scarcely point to a credible mandate. Under them, Ethiopia is being transformed into a veritable dystopia. The frequent kidnappings, arbitrary detentions, unending killings, a culture of ineptitude and corruption without parallel in the country’s history, and the general breakdown of law and order are manifestations of that phenomenon.

Mr. President

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, allow me to close by expressing my belief that, before long, you and other like-minded officials would find a resolution to the challenge that this most unwelcome of episodes has left in its train. In recent years, you have been a remarkable champion of Ethiopia. It is my hope that under your leadership, the Bank will continue with its good work, such that the ultimate beneficiaries, the people of Ethiopia, could count on your leadership, as well as others similarly positioned, to stand by their side in their seemingly unending struggle to escape from the gripping pangs of poverty.

Kindly accept my sentiments for a speedy recovery of the aggrieved staff member.
And my best wishes for a peaceful and productive New Year.

The incredible Ethiopian athlete Gudaf Tsegay obliterated the world record in the women's 5000m by 5 seconds, running an astonishing 14:00.21 at the Diamond League. The previous mark of 14:05.20 was set just in June by Faith Kipyegon of Kenya. 

Few days ago, Gudaf won gold in the 10,000m at the World Championships with Ethiopian athletes sweeping 🥇🥈🥉 in Budapest & she was unable to contend for the 5000m title during that time due to injury.

Listen his the commentators were left stunned & speechless. One of the commentators said “I am losing my mind!”
