Empire of Dust is ultimately a real life buddy comedy about two fringe outsiders finding some consolation in each others mutual isolation. The black guy is obviously miserable because he’s at the highest tier of his own kind, able to mentally process the flaws of his people while being trapped in the third world hell of Bantoid existence. Meanwhile, the Chinaman is himself at one of the lowest echelons of existence, a disposable cog ranked so poorly that he somehow finds himself in a savage wasteland forced to persist in Sisyphean frustration. He gets berated by his boss and screwed with by locals. Both him and Eddy are ground between these oppositional cultures and ethnicities, and as a result are atomized by circumstance. The entire thing being filmed by Belgians is just poetic cherry on top.

I just finished ‘The Separation’, by Christopher Priest. Second time I’ve read it, and the first in about 12 years.

It is PEAK weird fiction. Weird in its purest form. I feel lost. Like I don’t know what’s real anymore.

Priest was sorely underrated.
