The core problem with the AU is that a significant number of African counties still report back to their colonial masters.

That kind of external alignment makes genuine continental cohesion difficult.

It becomes even more complicated when a large share of the AU’s budget comes from Europe and Washington 😁

When President Kagame was tasked with AU reforms, he did what consultants are supposed to do: diagnose the gaps, outline the constraints, and propose actionable solutions. He submitted a comprehensive report for implementation. Once his mandate ended, however, the report appears to have followed a familiar African institutional trajectory it was filed, archived, and forgotten.

Take a simple example: during the 2016 AU Summit in Kigali, the African passport was launched with much fanfare.

President Idriss Déby and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma were among the first recipients.

I remember that night having a drink with my friends at KCC celebrating that finally Africans were going to have one passport and that Africa was about to operationalize free movement across the continent.

Ten years later, President Deby is gone, I am not sure if Dr Zuma knows where that passport is and the rest is history 😂
