Heritage Irish Thatch Dwellings Made of Mud. 1700c
@irish_thatch
Robert Hayes-McCoy owns one of Ireland's centuries-old heritage mud-walled thatched dwellings. There are only approx 300 of these historic homes still standing.
@BoyneNews They go too fast - far to fast for the comfort of their fare-paying passengers and seriously too fast for cyclists who are FORCED to share the same lane with Buses and Taxis!!!
Will you stop calling them 'BUS Lanes'. They are cyclist's lanes too ... AND ... Taxi lanes. Why BUS?
@Ramble_Jack@masterthatcher2 €20,000 Jack... or €1,000 per annum because a €20,000 thatch now will last for 20 years into the future. We have 300 approx genuine mud-walled heritage thatched cottages left.
We're talking about €300,000 pa to preserve an irreplaceable part of our famine heritatge. C'Mon!
It may not be the most attractive looking #heritage#thatched#cottage in #Ireland to you. BUT!
All I see is a huge #opportunity to create a very comfortable #home for a fraction of the average price of a modern home extension.
Start... by imagining those walls painted WHITE!
@masterthatcher2 Ah listen! The weather in Ireland is!!! Especially on the SE and East coast where our few remaining mud-walled heritage thatched cottages still stand.
You'se (Pardon is 'Irishism') do be lucky. I really don't think that our Heritage body know the different between mud and stone!
#rain , High Winds, #Floods and #water... and all you have to hold the roof over your head is mud walls.
A lovely centuries-old #thatched cottage from #Limerick. The original cottage is made of mud and it appears to be extended in stone.
Any idea, which end is stone? L or R?
@jgeoghegantd I was very familiar with the Dodder throughout the '50's, 60's and 70's when flooding was an annual event. And believe me, the flooding was bad. There were cottages on Beaver Row that had no water, no flood protection and very little else. But they survived... with little help.
From memory this cooling shelf cut into the mud wall of a #thatched cottage in #Wexford#Ireland is called a Stillion
It's prime purpose is to keep milk and cream cool
Just look at the depth of the mud-wall in this centuries old magnificent 2-storey #Heritage house made of mud
Anois teacht an earraigh / Now with the coming of #spring.
Beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh / the days will be getting longer.
Now, it's time to make your fresh reed St. #Brigid's #cross and burn the old one in accordance with the very ancient Irish tradiiton to welcome Spring.
Okay, let's be practical. With a glass of #breakfast orange juice, the #irishtimes a cup of good coffee and a nice sunny day, this mud-walled #thatched#cottage may not look very vulnerable. But it is!
I'm hitting my 80's. When I am gone, this centuries old dwelling is gone too.
@ImpracticalArch I wonder.... how can you spend five years (in my day) studying architecturea and end up designing 🙀 and even more 🙀! Bunkers and public conveniences.
Maybe we should let artists design houses and then the architect steps in and makes the artist's design work!
Ho Hum! 🙀
A much loved #irish song of 'longing' for those simple times past.
"Go as it may as through life I have wandered,
You never could find it in palace or hall.
A #home so sweet as the home of my childhood,
It’s that little #thatched cabin in Ireland - the best home of all."
An lovely old #Irish#Christmas blessing
"Bless you and yours
As well as the #cottage you live in.
May the roof overhead be well #thatched
And those inside be well matched."
