Here’s the reality: when a currency is redenominated, its external purchasing power stays exactly the same. So 10,000 units of the old currency simply become 1 unit of the new one.

That’s exactly what happened with the Ghanaian cedi in 2007... one new cedi was set equal to 10,000 old cedis.

Which is why a 2-litre Coke costs around 23 cedis in Ghana right now. At today’s exchange rate, that works out to roughly N2,840 (or thereabouts.

Meanwhile, you know how much you buy the same 2-litre bottle in Lagos.
