When Chris Brown’s court case happened in 2009, J-Hope was 15 and RM was 14 both are middle and high-school kids in South Korea focused on dance and underground rap. They weren’t fluent in English, and Western internet drama wasn’t part of Korean media or news then. To them, Chris Brown was simply a global force in dance and R&B whose music and choreography they studied and respected after Michael Jackson.
So expecting two Korean teenagers to have researched the personal legal history of every foreign artist they admired is an impossible task, hyper-localized Western standard. Condemning them now for a casual backstage photo with Chris Brown and Usher is selective outrage dressed up as accountability.
Western artists have collaborated, toured, and reconciled with Chris Brown for years with far less scrutiny. Yet when it’s BTS, a standard industry photo is treated like a moral betrayal. J-Hope is a dancer’s dancer and RM is a student of hip-hop. Linking up with major performers is normal professional networking and mutual respect among hip-hop industry not an endorsement of anyone’s past.
Both of them are grown men navigating the global music industry. Let them appreciate the music, take the photo, and move on without the internet policing their every interaction.
the most disturbing part of all this is so many of you are determined no matter the consequences to inflict as much pain, suffering and public humiliation onto bts as possible all in the name of “accountability” “education” “activism.” there’s something deeply wrong here. mind you bts aren’t the criminals yet once again people are going out of their way to misdirect their anger towards them. bts have become everyone’s performative outage punching bags. the guys told y’all to love your damn selves but a lot of you took that to mean they must be held accountable for the actions of others and are responsible for solving all the world’s problems and when they don’t live up to your standards they must be punished and taught a lesson.
i hope the guys are surrounded by all the love and support in the world right now and are able to protect their peace. you have every right to be disappointed by their decision however many of you have taken your disappointment to a very dark place. bts don’t deserve this.
BLACKPINK works with a rapist and suddenly nobody has anything to say. Jennie gets photographed with a rapist and it’s crickets. Jisoo was helping her abusive brother and somehow nobody had anything to say about that either. So many K-pop idols have even gone to Chris Brown concerts and, once again, not a peep.
But of course, they weren’t the “main characters,” right? 😭 The second BTS goes to an Usher concert where Usher had invited Chris Brown to perform suddenly it’s headline news and all these K-pop stans who were nowhere to be found magically crawl out of the woodwork just to drag BTS. 😭
The sheer amount of hatred you have for BTS genuinely says a lot about you. Like, please go outside, make some friends, put your phone down for five minutes, touch some grass, work out literally do ANYTHING. Because having this much hatred for an artist is NOT normal 💀
I think people have completely lost the meaning of “parasocial” in this discourse. Not attacking BTS every time they make a choice I wouldn’t make doesn’t mean I think they can do no wrong. It means I understand my place as a fan. I love BTS. I think very highly of them as people based on what they’ve shown us over the years. But I do not know them, and they do not know me. I’m a fan of their art. They are grown men with lives outside of this fandom, and they do not need my approval for every concert they attend, person they meet or choice they make. I don’t have to defend every choice they make because their choices aren’t mine to defend. And I don’t have to attack them either. I can simply disagree, decide what MY boundaries are and move on. That’s not blind loyalty. If anything, believing your relationship with an artist gives you the right to “educate” them, demand apologies and pressure them into living according to your personal values feels far more parasocial to me.
