NOW: Thousands will pour into Luneta Park and the People Power Monument on EDSA from various points across Metro Manila this Bonifacio Day—with more demonstrations taking place across the country—as they again drum up the fight against the persistent crisis of government corruption.

“Baha sa Luneta 2.0,” led by the alliance Kilusang Bayan Kontra Korakot and multisectoral groups, will begin its main program at 9 a.m. They will attempt a march to the foot of Mendiola later in the afternoon. At the same time, the “Trillion Peso March”—composed mainly of the Tindig Pilipinas coalition, as well as religious and civil society organizations—will take place along EDSA with a program extending into the early evening.

Sunday’s massive, wide-ranging protests follow the last set of events that took place on Sept. 21, which coincided with the 53rd anniversary of Martial Law. Similarly, Nov. 30—a holiday commemorating the birth of the revolutionary and Katipunan leader—will be marked by demands ranging from calls for transparency to the resignation of the nation’s top leaders altogether.

A group of medical experts on Tuesday pressed Congress and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to restore billions in funding allegedly stripped from the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) in recent national budgets.

At a press conference, members of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) lamented how chronic underfunding has pushed poor Filipinos to beg for healthcare.

Former presidential spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque said authorities in the Netherlands booked him a flight to Vienna in Austria, adding that he was told that it was up to the latter’s government to give him protection.

Amid reports that he was arrested after the cancellation of his passport in connection with qualified human trafficking charges, Roque said he was disembarked from the plane, and his trip to Vienna didn’t push through.

Tinutulan ng ilang grupo ang pagpapalibing kay dating Senate president at Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile sa Libingan ng mga Bayani ngayong Sabado, Nov. 22.

Sa kanilang joint statement, sinabi ng Tindig Pilipinas kasama ang iba pang organisasyon at ilang indibidwal na hindi karapat-dapat si Enrile na mailibing sa nasabing libingan dahil sa mga kontrobersiyang kinasangkutan niya, kabilang na ang Martial Law.

“Enrile's burial at the LNMB, like the burial of the dictator in that same cemetery on November 18, 2016, will send the wrong message: That crime pays, that the corrupt and the powerful can always escape punishment, that murder and corruption would be rebranded in death as ‘heroism’—while so many of their victims continue to endure pain and injustice,” saad ng grupo.

“Let us make this clear: the burial of Juan Ponce Enrile at the Libingan ng mga Bayani is historical distortion. It is a lie that, yet again, whitewashes the crimes of the Marcos Sr. dictatorship,” dagdag pa nila.

NEWS UPDATE: The four UP students and two youth activists arrested along Kalaw Avenue, Manila during the Labor Day protest May 1, 2024, have now been cleared of all criminal charges.

The final charge of direct assault filed against the individuals was dismissed by the Metropolitan Trial Court of Manila Thursday based on reasonable doubt, fully clearing the Mayo Uno 6.

The malicious mischief charge had been dismissed for lack of probable cause June 20, 2024 and the illegal assembly charge was dismissed for insufficiency of prosecution evidence March 13.

The group’s legal counsel also asserted that the arresting officers be held accountable for their use of excessive force. They likewise criticized the police’s use of Batas Pambansa 880, a Marcos-era law predating the current constitution, to justify their arbitrary arrests of protesters.

“This acquittal is not just a legal victory—it’s a reminder that the streets belong to the people,” said Mark Vincent Lim, one of the six’s lawyers.
