Ah yes, the familiar bedtime story: “The people should decide our collective future.” It’s charming in the way nursery rhymes are charming — lyrical, moralistic, and wildly unconcerned with how anything actually works.

Let’s begin with the obvious inconvenience this post tries to smother with slogans: the EU is not a neat little village council where “the people” vote on the institution itself every few years. You don’t wake up on a Tuesday, stroll to a ballot box, and tick “Yes please, keep the supranational regulatory empire.” The EU is a treaty-engine, a legal bureaucracy, and a political class threaded through national governments. You “vote for” it in the same way you vote for gravity: indirectly, rarely, and usually only after it drops something on your head.

You vote for national parties, those parties send ministers, ministers bargain in councils, councils produce directives, commissions interpret them, courts entrench them, and by the time any of it comes back to you it has the moral intimacy of a tax code written by strangers. If this is “the people deciding,” then so is a cow deciding its dinner because it once mooed in the direction of a field.
