One day, you'll realize you've already lived through some of the best days of your life, and you didn't even know it at the time.
You were too busy chasing what's next, busy worrying about what's missing, thinking happiness was something you'd arrive at one day, once everything finally made sense.
But while you were waiting, you were laughing with people who won't always be around. You were making memories in places you'll one day drive past and feel something you can't explain.
You were standing in moments that didn't feel like the good old days till they were gone. That's the thing no one tells you. You rarely recognize happiness when you're standing in it. It feels too ordinary, too small to matter, till it becomes a memory you'd give anything to experience again.
But right now, you're still in it. You still have the people, the moments, the chances, the ordinary days you'll one day call some of your favorite. So stop waiting for life to start. You're already living it.
Habs coach Marty St. Louis getting philosophical tonight:
“Negative energy is always heavier…For every positive word, you’ll find four more negative words in the dictionary. When you bring positive energy, enthusiasm, it all starts there. Your brain listens to you. If you’re always talking to yourself negatively, it’s gonna be harder to move forward. It starts with your attitude and how you see things. Perspective.”
“The players chose this, the life they lead today playing hockey. Nobody forced them to do this. So you have to remind yourself that you chose this path, it’s not gonna be a path that will always be easy. There will be obstacles and obstacles builds character. Success is temporary. Character is for life.”
Minor hockey in Canada can share the blame too. Kids between ages 10-16 Chase W’s and build super teams, while training with numerous skills coaches to improve their individual game instead of focusing on being coached and developing to play the game of hockey. Players on super teams don’t know how to lose and then struggle to deal with adversity. I see it first hand and it’s very troubling
I used to share this with our players before we started our offseason training. Some years, we had them sign it.
The Elite Choose to Do Hard Things
Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it (because it is easy).
14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it (because it is difficult).”
Your presence here shows that you have chosen the small gate and the narrow roadbecause you want to be Elite. Elite people want to be the best versions of themselves. They decide to be better today than yesterday and to be better tomorrow than today.
There Are Three Kinds of People: The soft and lazy, the mediocre, and the Elite.
· The soft and lazy dodge work.
· Mediocre people will work when the work finds them.
· The Elite, those trying to be their best, will always find work.
By being here, you have found work - hard work.
You don’t have to be here; you have chosen to be here. You have chosen to do something difficult.
You do not have to be here, but like me, you get to be here. Football is tough, but it is something you get to do, not something you have to do.
We hereby proclaim that there shall be no bad days in our weight room, on our practice field, or in our stadium.
We accept, however, that there will be difficult days, but that’s okay because we have chosen to do hard things.
This is where youth sports often get it backwards.
Kids don’t need more sport-specific training.
They need more athletic development.
Somewhere along the way, we convinced ourselves that earlier specialization meant better outcomes. More reps of the same skills. More drills. More structure. More pressure.
But strong, fast, coordinated, resilient athletes are not built by narrowing movement early. They’re built by expanding it.
Before worrying about a child’s shooting form, throwing mechanics, or position-specific skills, we should be asking:
Can they run, jump, stop, and change direction?
Can they balance, rotate, climb, crawl, and fall safely?
Can they move with rhythm, coordination, and confidence?
Athletic development is the foundation that sport skills are built on—not the other way around.
Speed, strength, power, and durability don’t magically appear because a kid played one sport year-round. They come from movement variety, free play, and exposure to different physical challenges across multiple planes and environments.
When we skip this phase and rush into specialization, we don’t create better athletes—we create fragile ones.
Develop the athlete first.
Then layer the sport on top.

Kobe Bryant shares a truth about leadership most people avoid.
"Leadership is lonely."
"If you're going to be a leader, you're not going to please everybody. You've got to hold people accountable."
Leadership isn't about being liked. It's about serving others, holding standards, and having the courage to do what's right even when it's uncomfortable.
The best leaders master these six skills:
1. Accountability - Leaders set the standard and embody it.
2. Connection - It starts with caring. You need relationships to establish trust. People won't follow until they know you and what you stand for.
3. Communication - What you say, how you say it, and when you say it.
4. Adaptability - People resist change. Your job is to navigate it with resilience. How you communicate and behave will either inspire adaptation or cause resistance.
5. Development - Great leaders develop more leaders. It means believing in people's potential.
6. Character - The foundation. Integrity, honesty, doing the right thing when it's hard. Leaders with character earn respect because they act in alignment with their values.
True leadership isn't about being liked. It's about doing what's right.
26 weapons grade parenting tips:
1/ Give them a "heads up," 5 minutes until bedtime, 10 minutes before leaving the playground
2/ Look at the world more through their eyes
3/ Don’t discipline like an angry madman. Stay calm and firm, model how you want THEM to resolve conflict
4/ Let them argue their case respectfully. Teaches negotiation and critical thinking
5/ Skip the long lectures
6/ Use natural consequences: forgot homework? Let them explain it to the teacher. Forgot their lunch? They'll figure it out
7/ Be consistent and follow through. "We are leaving the playground if you don't stop..."
8/ Make "How can I help?" part of YOUR vocabulary. It builds reliability
9/ Share your unseen efforts: hustling for work, hitting the gym. Actions speak louder than words but when they can’t see it, TELL THEM
10/ Teach accountability by modeling it yourself: “I was wrong. sorry”
11/ Create family traditions like weekly movie nights, Sunday pancakes, whatever works
12/ More game nights
13/ Take an interest in their interests: video games, books, sports... do it with them.
14/ Hike together. Nature slows time and generates gratitude
15/ Build something. LEGO, puzzles, a fort, the Amazon delivery box
16/ Teach them skills: tie knots, start a fire, read a map
17/ Introduce chess or checkers. Start early
18/ Let them plan a family outing or navigate you there (they can get you through the airport)
19/ Always greet your wife with love. That moment sets the tone for the family
20/ Share some challenges (age appropriate)
21/ Respect their privacy. Knock before entering their room
22/ Teach the value of money early: "wants vs. needs," compounding, saving, etc
23/ Let them see you sweat
24/ Teach them to cook. Start small: eggs, pancakes, cookies. Embrace the mess
25/ No screens at meals ever
26/ Prioritize movement as a UNIT: family walks, workouts, hikes, dance-offs- whatever gets the everyone in synch

As indefensible and unjustifiable a decision as there has been in MLB Postseason history.
My day-after take on the Game 5 debacle by the Blue Jays, who took 'how and why' fully out of the realm of possibility.
