Residents are being displaced by investors and tourists in record numbers. For Puerto Ricans, home is rarely an island paradise. While at the conference, please consider attending panels and presentations on the U.S. empire and Puerto Rico, and being cognizant of the space.
With @SPSAnews starting tomorrow, I want to remind my colleagues that the conference is taking place in a United States territory that has a federally appointed fiscal oversight board with powers that can override those of the local government.
Many loved ones have asked me how they can help PR. Here are some local orgs that are working with affected communities (mostly in the southwest). For Ann Arbor folks, Detroit Filling Station is having a fundraiser tomorrow! If you can contribute and share, it's appreciated!
Love and kindness are revolutionary, and they keep movements alive. These past few days, my housemates have calmed me down about missing class. They have helped me get picketing materials. They feed me breakfast in an early shift. Support each other; support the GEO STRIKE.
I made a TikTok about why I’m striking with @geo3550 for the @UMichStudents I teach in-person. (Also I’m pretty sure posting a TikTok here means I can’t call this my academic Twitter anymore oops) #StrikeForSafeCampus#UMMakesUsSick
The APSA Ralph Bunche Summer Institute taught me many skills I will need as a PoliSci PhD student. Even better, there I met this WONDERFUL person. She drove from Louisville to Ann Arbor to get me settled and did so much unpaid emotional labor. Love María (Mariana) Martínez.
