MALWARE "SPARKCAT" INFECTS GOOGLE PLAY & APP STORE APPS, STEALS CRYPTO WALLET MNEMONICS

- A major cybersecurity threat has been uncovered by Kaspersky, warning Android and iOS users of an alarming malware named "SparkCat".

- This malware has been found embedded in SDKs (Software Development Kits) within apps on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

- Over 242,000 devices are suspected to have been infected globally, with malicious code targeting users' crypto wallet information.

How It Works

- The malicious code, embedded in seemingly legitimate apps, uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology to scan a device’s image gallery. It then identifies recovery phrases—critical codes used to access and restore crypto wallets.

- These recovery phrases, which are essential for regaining control over a wallet, are often stored in users’ photos, screenshots, or images on their devices.

- By locating and extracting these phrases, attackers can seize full control over a victim’s crypto wallet and steal any stored funds.

- This attack is an evolution of a similar tactic reported by ESET in 2023, where malware targeted clipboard data to steal wallet access credentials.

- SparkCat goes a step further by using OCR to detect and steal recovery phrases stored in images on compromised devices.

Infected Apps

- Kaspersky found a total of 18 infected Android apps and 10 infected iOS apps. Some of these apps are still available on their respective stores, putting users at continued risk.

- One of the notable Android apps, ChatAi, has been downloaded over 50,000 times before being removed from the Google Play Store. Though the app is no longer available, many others with similar malware remain accessible.

- Kaspersky’s report indicates that the attack is actively spreading and may affect more users if they don't exercise caution when downloading apps.

- Since the malware is embedded in SDKs, it often targets apps that appear legitimate, making it harder for users to recognize the threat.
