Maharashtra: Muslim Families Allege Mob Violence, Intimidation, and Police Bias in Sangli's Arala Village Maharashtra.
Around 20 Muslim families in Arala village, Sangli district, Maharashtra, have reportedly decided to leave their ancestral homes following a series of alleged mob attacks, intimidation, and harassment. The families claim they have been facing hostility for several years and no longer feel safe living in the village.
According to local residents, the situation escalated after an incident on April 28, 2026, which allegedly began as a minor dispute at a mutton shop but later turned into a large-scale mob attack.

A formal complaint submitted to authorities alleges that a group of individuals mobilized a crowd that attacked members of a Muslim family using sticks, stones, sharp weapons, and other objects. The complainants allege that communal slogans were raised during the violence and that members of the mob made threats against the victims.

One injured complainant, Saddham Shaukat Dange, submitted a detailed complaint seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, action against police personnel, and the addition of more serious criminal charges. More than 30 individuals have reportedly been named in the complaint.
The complaint further alleges that police response was delayed despite emergency calls and that officers attempted to downplay the seriousness of the attack while recording statements. Family members have accused certain police officials of showing bias and failing to properly investigate the incident.
According to the complainants, the situation worsened after some of the accused obtained bail. They allege that celebratory processions, firecrackers, provocative slogans, and public intimidation were carried out in the village, creating fear among Muslim residents.
Community members say that repeated incidents over the past few years, combined with the recent violence, have left them feeling unsafe. As a result, several families announced plans to leave the village and seek justice through peaceful democratic means.
The affected families have demanded:

• A fair and independent investigation.
• Protection for vulnerable families and witnesses.
• Action against anyone found responsible for violence or intimidation.
• Accountability for any alleged misconduct by public officials.
• Assurance that all citizens can live safely regardless of their religion.

The allegations contained in the complaint are serious and require a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation by the relevant authorities.

Every citizen has the constitutional right to live with dignity, security, and equal protection under the law.
