William Thomson, or Lord Kelvin, was a top physicist born in Ireland in the 1800s. He became famous for creating the Kelvin temperature scale that scientists use today.

Kelvin made important discoveries in electricity, magnetism, energy, fluids, earth science, and communication. He published over 650 papers and came up with 70 patented inventions over his career.

He was also a skilled engineer who worked on laying the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean. Queen Victoria made him a knight for that feat in 1866. Later in life he was given the title Lord Kelvin.
