the advice to "write for yourself" is getting bastardized and/or misinterpreted to mean "do not ever express disappointment if a piece you worked hard on does not find its audience," but what it actually means is "only dedicate time & effort to ideas that excite you"
my unpopular opinion is that a lot of people who complain about ooc of their faves are fine with them being ooc in other ways. it's all personal preference.
My fic writing hot take is that everyone is asking the wrong question when it comes to characterization. "Would he say that?" is only part of it. What you really should be asking is, "What would happen to make him say that?" There lies the real joy of writing fanfiction
