For those of you who doesn't know, this is #TigrayGenocide. The woman in a military uniform is an Ethiopian soldier. The teen is a boy from #Tigray who has absolutely nothing to do with politics. #TigrayGenocide
Every Ethiopian claim on history, religion & culture are mainly from #Tigray:
-the oldest nation is #Axum
-the first #Christian nation is Axum
-Home of the Ark of the Covenant is Axum
-Ge’ez script started in Axum
-an Axumite Christian king welcomed first #Muslim refugees
-first anti Colonial struggle in #Africa started by Emperor Yohannes & Ras Alula
-and many more
Ethiopia is appropriating these & many more Tigrayan contributions, yet export war, famine & destructions to Tigray.
Recently, the current Ethiopian regime in collaboration with foreign forces, carried out #TigrayGenocide including the #AxumMassacre.
#UPR47 | 🇪🇹 #Ethiopia's human rights record will be examined by the 🇺🇳 @UN Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review Working Group.

📌 #Ethiopia is about to face the TOUGHEST austerity measure, perhaps in the modern financial history of the country.
Forced upon it by @IMFNews the depreciation of #Ethiopia currency (birr) may cause not only economic problem, but also social unrest & security challenges, God forbid🙆
📌 Green initiatives are neither new to #Ethiopia nor started with the current government, @cherinet_
The reason why #Ethiopia built a series of hydroelectric dams, since the 90s or electrified metro & railways is because of farsighted green policy initiatives of Meles Zenawi.
Even before then, Derg had green projects called "የአረንጓዴው ምርት ዘመቻ" (Campaign of green productivity) or Addis - Bah project (foresting between Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar)
The point I am trying to make is without reading and learning what so many others did, dispensing their credit to someone else is not only just plain wrong, but intellectually dishonest.
You like what is being done right now? Fine.
But to prop it up at the expense of the work of others is very much unbecoming and frankly, it would make you lose a whole lot of credibility, in my opinion.
Looks like everything worldwide has been down.
▪️Airlines grounded
▪️Banks down
▪️Media down
▪️Hospitals postpone operations
▪️Trains down
▪️Emergency services disrupted
▪️My local pharmacy was down
Now you understand why we need physical cash.
📌 This is a MUST read.
📌 Semhal Meles Zenawi, deeply thoughtful and extraordinarily impressive interview on "#Ethiopia economy, nation building and #Tigray war", summarized by a Facebooker Eph Rem.
(For those interested the interview link is below.
P.S it is behind paywall)
However, Ephrem compiled the main points 👇 Very well.
📍 The war in Tigray is linked to shifts in Ethiopia's political economy, where neoliberal reforms have led to increased state violence and predatory practices by elites. The failure of industrial policies and the rise of land and joblessness pressures contributed significantly to the crisis
📍The Ethiopian government conflated the TPLF with the Tigrayan population, leading to widespread human rights abuses and genocide. International entities, including the UNDP, indirectly supported these actions by prioritizing market penetration over human rights
📍The conflict severely impacted rural Tigray, with the destruction of health facilities, schools, and other social assets. Aid agencies exacerbated the crisis by suspending humanitarian aid, further punishing the Tigrayan population
📍The EPRDF’s factionalism, driven by rent-seeking and parasitic elites, weakened its ability to resolve political differences and mobilize cohesive actions. The old guard’s policies clashed with the multinational federal structure of Ethiopia, contributing to the regime’s instability
📍Changes under Hailemariam Desalegn, such as increased militarization and the contravention of party decisions, led to a decline in the EPRDF’s policy-making function and its capacity for conflict resolution. These shifts undermined nation-building efforts and exacerbated regional assertiveness
📍Despite significant economic and social gains in the aftermath of previous political recalibrations, Hailemariam’s policies failed to sustain these developments. This contributed to the rise of right-wing populism and anti-Tigrayan sentiment as economic populism waned.

🇺🇸🇷🇺🇸🇦🇪🇺🇬🇧 Saudi Arabia threatens the G7 countries to get rid of all EU securities if they confiscate $300 billion of Russian assets - Bloomberg
According estimates, Saudi Arabia does not have many European bonds, but EU officials fear that other countries will follow a similar example.
Per @GlobPeaceIndex by Institute for Economics and Peace, the economic impact of violence in Ethiopia from 2020 to 2023 was almost 110 billion USD.
This sum dwarfs both the GERD's cost (20-fold) and Ethiopia's overhyped 2024/2025 annual budget (6-fold).

Slow but important progress in estimation of fatalities from @PRIOresearch on Ethiopia's and Eritrea's genocidal war on Tigray.
Death toll of 300,000 still low compare to estimates by others, as efforts for UN or other reliable and comprehensive fact finding mission has barred.
