Il y a sept ans, ma famille a été expulsée de notre logement locatif à Montréal par un nouveau propriétaire qui avait légalement le droit de faire partir trois familles pour transformer un triplex en résidence pour une seule famille. Nous sommes passés à deux doigts de nous retrouver à la rue.

Comme mère débrouillarde et déterminée d’un fils handicapé ayant des besoins de soins exceptionnels, j’étais entourée de gens dont le mandat était de nous « accompagner », mais personne n’était réellement en mesure de nous aider. Je sentais le sol se dérober sous mes pieds, et tout autour de moi, des gens étaient payés pour m’accompagner pendant la chute. Quelqu’un pour m’écouter. Quelqu’un pour m’offrir une épaule. Identifier mes difficultés. M’aider à réfléchir à ma situation. Élaborer un « plan d’intervention ». Mais personne ne pouvait réellement m’aider à en sortir.

Les personnes itinérantes — et celles qui sont vulnérables et risquent de le devenir — n’ont pas besoin de plus d’épaules sur lesquelles pleurer. Elles ont besoin d’un logement stable.

Construire suffisamment de logements pour répondre à une demande qui explose, c’est difficile. Tenter de freiner l’afflux de nouveaux arrivants l’est aussi : le Québec ne contrôle pas l’immigration et le sujet est politiquement délicat.

Or, les campements poussent comme des champignons et deviennent de plus en plus difficiles à ignorer pour ceux qui les côtoient au quotidien. Les chefs de parti sont donc appelés à agir. Et la tentation sera grande de gonfler le système d’« accompagnement » : une nouvelle armée de travailleurs sociaux, de nouveaux emplois, de nouveaux services. C’est facile à financer, facile à promettre et facile à présenter comme une action concrète.

Le risque? Transformer l’accompagnement en industrie : des gens pour accompagner les plus vulnérables jusqu’au bord du gouffre — et parfois même au fond — sans leur donner les moyens d’en sortir.

Yesterday in Venice, Alex Gibney's nearly four-hour documentary "Musk" had its world premiere. It is a classic case of someone who has spent a career telling other people's stories taking on a man who actually builds those stories with rockets, cars, satellites, and infrastructure, not slides.

Alex Gibney is an acclaimed documentarian. An Oscar for Taxi to the Dark Side, Emmys for Going Clear on Scientology, high-profile films on Enron, Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. His specialty is exposing corporations, cults, and frauds. He does it skillfully and with a thesis. The problem starts when he applies the same method to someone who is not selling an illusion, but hardware that either flies or blows up in front of the entire world.

Gibney's fuel is controversy. Elon's fuel is the pursuit of truth hard, engineering truth, the kind that either works on the test stand or it doesn't. It would have been enough to make a film based on facts. Instead we got another rut that fits the slogans of provocation: megalomaniac, confidence man, threat to democracy, an AI avatar reciting old quotes, ex-wives, his father, a former partner. Musk said in 2023 it would be a hit piece. After the premiere, a large share of reviewers effectively agreed with him.

I don't know about you, but four hours of falsified formulas would bore me. Instead I watch how much Elon has already done. His energy is extraordinary. Tesla changed the car industry. SpaceX brings rockets back. Starlink works. Starship stands on the pad and prepares for the next flight. This is not a PowerPoint. It is steel, fuel, engines, and people who cannot hide failure in the edit suite.

A weak documentary like this is a crumb on the shoulder of his jacket. Now it depends on us when and how quickly that blown-off crumb a utopian attention vampire is simply starved of attention. You could list the names of people who tried to take Elon's energy. Energy is the most precious thing we have. Anyone who steals it with slogans, gossip, and a four-hour indictment that excludes the main subject is sowing under his own feet.

Gibney: you reap what you sow. If you have a shred of shame, look at the list of Elon's accomplishments. Look at what kind of person he is for the world and what he does around himself so that things get better cars that drive, internet from orbit, rockets that return, attempts at a brain-computer interface, AI that is supposed to be more than another chatbot. You can dislike his tweets, his political alliances. You cannot honestly erase the scale of what was physically built.

A good documentarian should stand, at least for a moment, in the shoes of the person he is portraying. Gibney did not just fail to do that. He took a measure cut for Enron and Holmes and held it up to a man who lands rockets. He left Elon's shoes in the edit suite. Elon walked on barefoot and kept building.

One man tells stories about the world from an editing chair. The other moves that world. A four-hour film will not change that. At most it will confirm what people who already disliked Musk already believed. Everyone else can blow the crumb off the jacket and keep going.

History does not judge a man by the length of a film. It judges him by what is still in the air when the camera has stopped running.
Controversy feeds on attention. Building feeds on repetition. One vanishes when you look away. The other keeps flying.
You can cut a man together in four hours. You cannot cut a landing together.
A documentary can be switched off. The work cannot.

What this is

A diagnosis – not a manifesto, not a program, not a complaint. Before anything can be defended, someone has to write down plainly what exists, what is being lost, and what can still be saved. That document does not currently exist. This is an attempt at it.

It is expected to be wrong in places. Everything here is open to correction by evidence.

Preamble

A civilization that cannot say what it is will not defend itself.

Europe has institutions for everything except the civilization that produced them. Before anything can be defended, we have to write down plainly what exists, what is being lost, and what can still be saved. That document does not exist. This is an attempt at it.

What we inherited

Western civilization is not an idea. It is a set of working arrangements, each of which took centuries to build and any of which can be lost in a generation:

1. Law that binds the ruler as well as the ruled.

2. Trial by evidence, not by authority.

3. Property the state cannot take at will.

4. Free exchange, and the prices that make it intelligible.

5. Science: the claim that reality is real, knowable, and open to correction by anyone with better evidence.

6. The individual conscience, which no institution owns.

7. The family: the only structure that transmits all of the above and invests in people who do not yet exist.

8. These are not Western by geography. They were built here, at great cost, and adopted elsewhere because they work.

What is being dismantled

9. Truth. Institutions built to establish facts now exist to protect narratives. Where evidence and narrative conflict, the evidence is managed. A society that cannot correct itself cannot steer.

10. Merit. "Who is best for this" is replaced by "who belongs in the room." Position is allocated by credential, network, and demonstrated loyalty. This is not equality; it is the protection of incumbents in the language of equality.

11. The right to build. In Europe, activity requires permission by default, and silence from the state means no. The visible harm is prevented. The invisible harm – the factory never built, the young person who leaves – is never counted.

12. Transmission. Birth rates across the West are far below replacement. The family has been reclassified as a lifestyle option and inheritance as an injustice. A civilization that stops handing things forward has already decided.

13. Free Speech. Not by law, mostly – by cost: employment, reputation, access. The result is a population that says one thing in public and another in private, and a growing number who have left public life entirely.

14. The nation. The frame inside which all of the above is actually enforced. Rights that no state will defend are only promises.

Why it happens

15. Accumulation. Every society builds layers of protected position. People who reach the top arrange the ladder behind them. Without periodic clearing, the layers thicken until the society is run by people it cannot remove.

16. Selection. An institution told to avoid scandal will select for people who avoid scandal, and those people prevent things rather than build them. No malice is required. Give an institution the wrong mission and it will perform it faithfully.

17. Therefore replacing individuals changes nothing. The same incentives produce the same people.

What can still be defended

18. The law still mostly works. The scientific method is intact even where scientific institutions are not. Property holds. Several nations still know what they are and say so.

19. And the monopoly on distribution is broken. For the first time in a century, an argument can reach a continent without anyone’s permission.

What must be rebuilt

20. The rotation of elites, so that position must be re-earned.

21. The presumption of freedom to act: punishment after harm, not permission before existence.

22. Institutions that transmit – schools, apprenticeships, prizes, families – rather than merely certify.

23. An authority that says publicly what is legitimate and what is corrupt, measured against a stated hierarchy of values. Nothing else on this list gets repaired while no one’s job is to name the problem out loud.

What the Council does

24. Keeps this map current, and publishes every revision.

25. Issues verdicts: short, signed, public judgments on specific laws, acts, and institutions, with the reasoning attached. Not lobbying. Not consultation.

26. Distributes the vocabulary, so people can name what they are living through. You cannot resist what you cannot describe.

What the Council does not do

27. Hold power. Seek office. Take money that comes with conditions. Issue anonymous statements.

28. Every member is named, every position public, every decision on the record. The case for this civilization can be made in the open. The case against it usually cannot.

The standard

29. We will be judged by whether what we say turns out to be true. That is the whole authority available to us, and it is enough.

Tell the truth. Have courage. And build.

Lawyers funded by the Justice Centre have sent a warning letter to @AndreaHorwath and @HamiltonPolice after they attempted to prevent a political conference organized by @DominionSoc from taking place in Hamilton.

Mayor Horwath urged local businesses not to host the conference. Hamilton Police then asked the public to report possible venues to police, despite identifying no crime.

Constitutional lawyer Hatim Kheir said, “The City of Hamilton and Hamilton Police are using both direct action and their influence to exclude a viewpoint they disagree with from the entire city. This is unconstitutional and fundamentally at odds with the way a free and democratic society operates.”

The legal warning letter calls on Hamilton officials to cease and retract their actions and respect Charter freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. 🇨🇦
