@john_ssmith_pa @burgessev LBJ was most recent president to chose not to run again (but probably would've lost in 1968). but politicians have done that. Dick Cheney didn't run for president after 8 years of VP. plenty of Governors/congress have served and then stepped out of the limelight.

@john_ssmith_pa @burgessev Washington didnt 'decide 2 terms was enough', he wanted to leave after 1... the need to stay compelled him to 2nd term (FDRs reasoning for 3&4). several POTUS, like Polk, campaigned on just 1 term. Truman could have ran again but literally rode into the sunset, home to MO from DC

@CNNOpinion @elliotcwilliams Why not retrocession DC back to Maryland. The land was MD, & just like the VA side. Just give it back. All the people would have 2 senators & a voting house rep.
And the city could have a real city govt too.
They can keep a federal district still too. (Exact lines TBD)

The reason for statehood is representation. Granting the land back to MD does that.

What should not be relevant is gaining a political advantage. Making the land part of Maryland will address everyone’s concerns. MD has lost every border dispute in its history. Being a city in that state is the answer.

A small federal zone can remain around the national mall. Treated like a federal park. Run by congress as DC was for 100 years
