15 years ago today, an EF5 tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri. This radar image shows the massive debris ball as the tornado moved directly through the city, killing 158 people and becoming one of the deadliest tornadoes in modern US history.

Joplin changed the weather world forever, exposing major issues with how tornado warnings were handled at the time, including warning lead times, false alarms, and warning fatigue. In the years that followed, it sparked major discussions about how forecasting and warning communication could improve to better protect lives. Since then, the weather world has evolved significantly, from warnings being pushed directly to mobile devices to coverage like ours providing realtime weather updates across social media platforms.
