Upma was served in a breakfast every morning in a hostel with a capacity of 100 people. Out of those 100 people, 80 people used to complain every day that different items should be made instead of upma.
But, the other 20 people were happy to eat upma. The remaining 80 people wanted to cook something other than upma.
The hostel warden voting method was proposed as some decision had to be reached in this chaotic situation.
According to this, whichever tiffin gets the most votes, that tiffin will be cooked that day.*
20 students who wanted Upma cast their vote accurately. The remaining 80 people cast their vote as follows.
18 - Masala Dosa
16 - Aloo Parotta & Dahi
14 - Roti & Subg
12 - Bread & Butter
10 - Noodles
10 - Idli Sambar
So, as per the voting results, Upma gets the highest number of votes, and again the same is served every day.
Lesson: As long as 80% of the population is selfish, divided and scattered, 20% will rule us.
This is a silent message.

A few months back, I met a senior doctor at a CME. After the talk, we had dinner and the discussion moved to management of elderly patients. He said, he has an elderly quota - of free treatment. I was stunned - many doctors waive fees for those who can’t truly afford, but it’s mostly done on a case by case basis. I was intrigued and asked him more. He wasn't the type who does good for publicity - he didn't need any more fame anyway.
He said, “ As people grow older their problems increase , but the income doesn’t increase as much. At retirement, this income becomes zero for many people. Some are lucky to have children who take care of them or get a pension, but many aren’t . I realized this when some of my regular patients for 10, 15 years started skipping appointments. They didn’t have the money to pay. Shifting to a government hospital would be free, but the continuity of care will be lost. Moreover , these patients had become friends, almost family to me. They are from a poorer part of the city. So I decided to waive their fees and run special OPD for them, for as long as they live or I live. I get my happiness from theirs”.
Hearing about his care, made me happy too. The halwa somehow tasted sweeter that night. Kindness has an 360 degree domino effect. Like a benevolent earthquake.
Contrary to popular belief, many doctors do far more good to poor in a week than others do in a lifetime. They go beyond the call of duty, for Hippocratic oath is the floor, not the ceiling. Humanity knows no ceiling.
Yesterday, I had a visit from a young man who follows me on social media.
He travelled a long way to meet me.
He identified himself with alcohol use disorder.
He lost his job recently because his working skills and travel to the office was severely hampered.
He took on some work from home on freelance projects but could not deliver on time because he was mostly drunk or sleeping or going out to get more alcohol.
Initially he drank with friends, but they stopped coming because he used to get aggressive and violent when alcohol serves were limited. He did not need them anymore and started drinking alone, even right after getting up from bed.
He has a wife and a young daughter who stayed separately with his sister-in-law since past few months because his aggression turned towards the little girl.
He told me he could not remember a lot of things. Sometimes he forgets to take a bath and when people around him tells him he stank, he would remember.
He stopped going outside and meeting people. He started developing suicidal thoughts and attempted once.
He lost his self when his daughter called him on the phone last week, to wish him on his birthday. He took the train to meet me.
I have enrolled him in our de-addiction program and the specialists will strive hard to ensure that this young family will get back together. He has no cirrhosis, so he does not require follow up or treatment from my side.
But on this occasion, I would like to summarize some points on what alcohol does to your brains. Please read and share widely.

Sometimes, we need to see beyond the immediate medical concerns.
I recently treated a patient who underwent angioplasty. Despite severe financial difficulties, he managed to pay for the procedure through crowdfunding. But after surgery, his situation worsened—he lost his job because his employer doubted his ability to work post-surgery. As a widowed single parent with a daughter in school, this left him in a dire position.
Recognizing the gravity of his situation, I called his employer, explained the challenges he was facing, and successfully convinced them to reinstate him.
Today, the patient called to thank me. This experience reminded me that our responsibility as doctors often extends beyond treatment—it’s about helping patients reclaim their lives.
