The Taliban continues to violate the human rights of women and girls through a new decree that entrenches child marriage in law - making an already dismal situation even worse for them.

The decree addresses the circumstances in which women and girls can seek marriage separation.
It strips them of their autonomy and gives males relatives control of their marital arrangements.
It provides limited possibilities of challenging forced unions.
It institutionalizes and normalizes child marriages.

This must stop. The international community through diplomatic pressure and principled engagement with the Taliban de facto authorities, must demand reversal of all draconian laws in Afghanistan.

HRCP is deeply concerned by the escalating confrontation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the loss of life among both protesters and law enforcement personnel. In 2016, the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act was passed with the promise of making the internet safer. A decade later, the law has evolved through four different governments into a multi-layered system of digital control.

From the first arrests of local reporters in 2017 to the birth of 'Digital Terrorism' charges in 2023, the target shifted from criminals to the voices of journalists, vloggers, and citizens.

The 2026 reality: Today, we are no longer just dealing with a 'law'—we are living in a permanent regulatory framework. With the NCCIA replacing the FIA and the SMPRA enforcing platform rules, the digital landscape has been fundamentally rewritten.

Milestones:
2016: The PML-N passes PECA; the FIA Cyber Crime Wing begins enforcement.

2022: The 'Public Figure' Ordinance attempts to make dissent a non-bailable crime.

2024: Platform X is blocked for 10 months; the NCCIA is officially born.

2025-26: Section 26A criminalises 'fake news', while journalists like Sohrab Barkat, Khalid Jamil, and Farhan Mallick face cases.

The victims changed. The governments changed. But the law only grew stronger.
