A tricky show to digest but it made such important points about creating under the white gaze, the pressure to make the “right” kind of Black art (respectability politics is a bitch) and the particular racism of white gays who think they’re absolved simply cuz they gay.

Still, I think this show could’ve benefited from a “Black out night” like A Slave Play had )did I miss it?), where the audience was all Black, with non-Black patrons vetted by Black folks. This was esp. hard to watch in “mixed company”. So much raw pain.

Some of the best writing advice I ever got was to write like my parents are dead and @StrangeLoopBway reminded me of why that’s so important, especially for Black writer tackling tough subjects.

Also, I’m concerned non-Black audience members didn’t know why a joke was funny or understand the layers of meaning with “A Color Purple” quotes or Madea references added throughout.
