There are actually 2 different Gitanjalis, & the 1 that won the prize is a curated ghost of the original.
The 1910 Bengali original has 157 poems. The 1912 English version (which won the Nobel) has only 103. But here is the twist, only 53 of those 103 poems are actually from the original Gitanjali. The other 50 were taken by Tagore from his other books like Gitimalya, Naivedya, Kheya, Chitra, Kalpana, & a few from MansΔ«, Sonar Tori, etc.
Tagore chose only the most spiritual & mystic poems for the West, leaving out the more radical, social, & complex Bengali verses. The Nobel was actually won by a Remix :)
