Mr. President, Whose Term Has Expired. May Wisdom and Reason Guide Your Decisions
Dear Somali People,
I wish to state clearly that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's constitutional term of office expired on 15 May 2026. No individual stands above the Constitution, and every public office holder has a duty to respect the limits of the mandate entrusted to them by the Somali people.
Rather than prioritizing a free, fair, and inclusive election that restores public confidence, the current leadership appears increasingly focused on political confrontation, pressure against dissenting voices, and policies that deepen divisions within Somali society.
As an opposition , I firmly believe Somalia must be governed through dialogue, consultation, and national consensus not through political intimidation or the concentration of power. Our nation needs leadership that unites its people and strengthens stability, not leadership that fuels polarization and conflict.
I am also deeply concerned about agreements relating to oil and natural resources. Decisions with far-reaching consequences for the environment, local communities, and future generations must not be made without broad consultation, national political consensus, and clear guarantees protecting the rights and interests of affected populations.
The people living between Ceeldheer and Xarardheere deserve to have their voices heard. Their environment, livelihoods, and future must be protected. Sustainable development cannot be achieved by excluding communities from decisions that directly affect them.
Mr. President, those around you may be presenting an inaccurate picture of the country's reality. While you may be led to believe that public support remains strong, many Somalis are waiting for elections, accountability, and leadership capable of guiding the country forward with renewed legitimacy.
Somalia is at a critical moment. The country urgently needs a credible and widely accepted electoral process that removes uncertainty about its leadership and restores confidence in national institutions. Any further delay risks weakening public trust and undermining democratic governance.
I therefore call upon you to respect the Constitution, listen to differing voices, and facilitate a free, fair, and credible election that earns the confidence of all Somalis.
History remembers leaders who place the national interest above personal power. It does not remember those who cling to office while public trust fades. The time has come to act with wisdom, responsibility, and respect for the will of the Somali people.
