@StallionCornell If they did, I think they would either leave like me or go full-on like the Laffertys. If the restoration was real… and originally violent like that, the implication would be that the truth has been diluted OR that evidence and ethics are stacked against the church being true.
@StallionCornell I’m exmormon and I basically agree with all of this. The writing in Under the Banner of Heaven *so* bad, but I do feel the story is poignant. I don’t think Mormons are dupes, but I don’t think most have fully internalized the ramifications of our history. 1/2
@sumusimp They didn’t get it wrong… that’s really how it used to be before 1991(?). The writing is really bad though—“sometimes your wife knows you better than you do… much like Emma and Joseph smith in this flashback” *smoooth* 🙄
@james_shepard_3 Guys, can we just admit the dialogue is bad? I feel like exmormons are in this really ironic position of defending bad writing on partisan grounds. That’s Mormons’ job. We left that behind, y’all.
@datanerd_holly Obviously, as an exmormon, I really want the issues of the Church’s history brought to light… but I feel like I’m the only exmormon who will admit that Under the Banner of Heaven is, like, *really* poorly written. Star Wars prequel-level bad.
@Exmo_Lex Also, all the little historical expositions from Allan… like, “remember, how Joseph Smith moved to Kirtland in 1833…” or whatever… it’s like: *duh* they both learned that stuff in Sunday school a million times, there is no reason for the character to be saying that.
@Exmo_Lex I’m exmo, and I gotta be real… the dialogue is cringey. Sure, some Mo’s use religious language a lot, but I feel like the writing on this series is just bad in general. Like when they’re in the shower and he gets all poetic about the desert. Who talks like *that*?
@yasisalek@dissectpodcast I even remember this chuggy power chord song that went “you get what you want if you don’t hold your breath….” and the singer of the band introduced me to At The Drive-In’s Vaya…. Memory is funny…
@mgsperry@Kent_in_Utah@BYU So if you believe the priesthood ban was “God’s timing”... I hate to break it to you, but that means believing that God is racist. If one race is given privileges over another—that is by definition racist.
@poli_text@jvorndran5 @lvcavalheiro @elonmusk@PPathole@SenSanders It’s natural to mythologize the success of others if we identify with them in some way and long for that success ourselves... but don’t let that cloud your judgement about what a truly fair world could look like.
@poli_text@jvorndran5 @lvcavalheiro @elonmusk@PPathole@SenSanders The better tech gets, the more reasonable socialism becomes. Imagine a machine in your neighborhood that freely produced food. Would you rather your cranky, rich neighbor own it and charge everyone to use it...or that the entire neighborhood share and benefit from it?
@EliMcCann But yeah, if you break it down, the Church only celebrates temple-married sex. You have to pay tithing to go to the temple. So they basically levy a 10% sex tax.
