I asked Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress, about the time he turned down $200m.
He was 24. The company was about 2.5 years old, 20 people, and someone offered $200m to buy it.
His investors ran a secondary instead of selling. Matt sold a little of his own stock in that round.
That was the first real money he ever saw. He paid off his credit cards and bought his mom a house.
I asked Mark Pincus what Zynga's early numbers looked like.
Went public after 4 years.
The year before going public they did $450m in free cash flow.
Had over $1b in cash on the balance sheet and had never spent a dollar of the money they raised.
Mark Pincus built Zynga while raising 5 kids. His coach Bing Gordon told him the thing kids always remember is the first and last 15 minutes of their day.
Mark made it his rule. He never missed the first or last 15 minutes, never missed breakfast, always did bath and bedtime.
