Why the name thing is so triggering to me and so many other Asians. A thread.
I spent my entire adult life in the U.S. by my "nickname" Michelle because I hated dealing with the burden of correcting people each time they got my name wrong.
I want to know their names, who and what they loved, the people they had waiting for them at home, everything they hoped for. I want to know the fabric of their days and the contexts of their lives.
There are people fighting to walk around a supermarket without a mask because they think it’s their “right”.
Then there are people screaming at someone who’s sitting alone in an empty park, for not wearing their mask.
Why is common sense so uncommon?
Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory, or an acceptance of the way things are. It's a celebration of progress. It's an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible––and there is still so much work to do.
