Parking lots attached to the actual place you are going.
Drive throughs where the food comes to the car while you sit in it.
Ranch dressing by the gallon.
Tex-Mex that cannot be explained only experienced.
Dental care that actually works.

Then they found the grocery stores.

Five of them within one mile.
Each one the size of an aircraft hangar.
Burgers. Steaks. Brisket. Ribs. Pulled pork. Lamb. Veal. Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday.

The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes.
In silence.
Processing.

They finally understand why we do not have trains.

We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive.
Parking lots the size of small European countries.
Airports in every city worth visiting.

Why would we need trains.

The Germans are taking ranch home by the bottle.
The Dutch found queso and briefly lost the ability to speak.
The Japanese are photographing HEB like it is the Louvre.
The Czechs are weeping in West, Texas.

I’m tired of the sycophantic water‑carrying and coordinated, strategic messaging being passed off as organic.

I’m disappointed at how readily leaders sell out — and how eagerly their followers buy obvious nonsense.

I’m tired of watching people I once respected perform moral gymnastics to climb the ladder of power, forgetting that the reason they started climbing was to do something real and good and true.

In a perfect world, integrity wouldn’t be for sale and mission wouldn’t be leveraged for personal enrichment.

But, of course, our world isn’t perfect.

And all of this disappointment is primarily a product of my own self‑delusion. People are inherently fallible and prone to temptation and seduction. I can’t decide if acknowledging that painfully obvious fact feels more like weary resignation or self-care.

High expectations require emotional fortitude. Impossible expectations are self-defeating.

The reality is that you can’t win if you don’t play, and no one wants to be a loser.

Most are just navigating life as it is rather than as it should be but that’s cold comfort to my sleeve‑dwelling heart.

“Living in a new world, with an old soul” still gets me every time.
