I was ashamed to hear the recent testimony of 3 top university presidents. In my personal opinion, it was one of the most despicable moments in the history of U.S. academia. The 3 Presidents were offered numerous opportunities to condemn racist, antisemitic, hate rhetoric and refused doing so hiding behind calls for “context.” The memories of my father’s parents, Abraham and Rachel Bourla, his brother David and his little sister Graciela, who all died in Auschwitz, came to mind. I was wondering if their deaths would have provided enough “context” to these presidents to condemn the Nazis' antisemitic propaganda.

And because dehumanization of the victims makes it easier to “set your own context” and justify anything, here is a picture of Graciela Bourla, who was exterminated in the concentration camp at the age of 17. Unfortunately, no pictures of my grandparents and uncle survived. I still wonder what they looked like.

A reason for hope: Israel has never had more support from the Arab world.

This is why Hamas and other Iran proxies attacked and are continuing to attack Israel.

They fear the wave of change among Arab nations who are intimately familiar with the threat of Islamic fundamentalism.

• Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Morocco all blocked anti-Israel measures at the Arab League summit earlier this month.
• Support for Hamas in the UAE fell from 48% of respondents in 2017 to 17% in 2023, and stands at just 10% among Saudis.
• Total trade between Israel and Abraham Accords nations grew nearly 6X 2019-2022.
• Arab Israelis largely condemned Hamas, fought and died to save Israeli lives on October 7th, and many today are serving valiantly in the IDF.

It’s of course not all roses. Anecdotally, numerous Israeli friends with friends/business partners in neighboring Arab countries have either not heard from their Arab contacts, or received hateful messages amid the ongoing war.

But compared to previous wars and conflicts fought by Israel, the support and moderate voices from the Arab world show there are, in @CanbolatSercan words, seeds of peace.
