How often it is that a young person’s pain (self-harm; eating problems) is a violent attack, via the self, on a dysfunctional family, school or wider system; a violent call for systemic change. But we rarely see it like that - instead we pathologise them & treat *their* disorder.
15 years ago my PhD advisor taught me One Weird Trick for editing your own writing. Edit **back to front**, paragraph by paragraph. I still use it and it still surprises me how well it works. When I get my students to do it, it often blows their minds. Try it!
I was recently on a flight to Charlotte, and when the flight landed two women, one Black one white, got into an argument after bumping into one another in the aisle. When they got off the plane, the white woman turned to the Black woman, red with anger, and called her the n-word.
Anthropologists have noted how many indigenous groups use instances of individual distress as occasions to inspect what's wrong with the social group; the individual embodies the unworked-through tensions & pains of the collective. Via this social ritual the individual is healed.

But the where Jon tells Arkansas AG Rutledge that he would go through hell or high water if he had a trans kid, and that her law was "antithetical to the values she professes to espouse."

Thesmophoria was an all-woman festival in honor of Demeter, held in late October/ November, across Ancient Greece. Plants associated with this festival were pennyroyal & pine - known abortifacients. It’s been suggested the Thesmophoria was actually a celebration of birth control.
It is entirely possible that entire professional cultures may have, what Freud termed, low ego-strength - i.e. low capacity to face full & bare reality, especially when decidedly unpleasant, without escaping via the more primitive defences of aggression, distortion & denial.
Most British people have never known another monarch, so she’s been a thread winding through all our lives. She did her duty by the country right up until her dying hours, and became an enduring, positive symbol of Britain all over the world. She’s earned her rest. #TheQueen
