I haven't seen anyone tracking all of the alleged (or open) Trump corruption, self-dealing, and quid pro quos in one place. For the last 15 months, I've been tracking every single tip+story I can find and organizing it. Today, I published a 6,000 word piece with every example.
I'm glad that the author of "Rent Control Is Fine, Actually" calls themself Unlearning Economics, bc it's good to just state things clearly, such as the open animosity that many left economic populists have for the field of economics and economists themselves.
Economists aren't gods, and economics isn't a divine truth, but economists are good--better than most--at something critical for making public policy: They're good at identifying tradeoffs. "Rents are too high, so freeze them" is compelling politics. But in the absence of other pro-supply policies, if you make it illegal to increase rents, landlords will stop upgrading units and convert them to condos, which reduces the supply of units for rent, reduces mobility, and drives up rents for everybody else.
The left econ populists have some clear, and clearly stated, policy ideas:
- Rents are too high, so freeze them.
- Electricity is expensive, so stop rate increases.
- Homes are too expensive, so ban institutional investors.
- Power prices are rising, so ban data center construction.
... All these policies feel like solutions because they're brisk, they name enemies, and they take on the most visible source of frustration. But they are much better as villain-naming exercises than they are as a complete public policy. On their own, each creates other problems: less housing built, less clean electricity built, abdicating energy policy by encouraging AI firms to build data centers abroad in unsavory countries with more emissions, etc.
I can't think of a single economic populist idea that wouldn't be helped with a little dose of economics, which is why it's troubling when I see the left participating in, and even celebrating, the great unlearning of economics.
4. Oncology is HUGE. mRNA tech + checkpoint inhibitors + existing cancer vaccine research + high-throughput sequencing + bioinformatics, etc are all bigger deals than the LLM part everyone is leading with in this case. We're just currently all anchored to LLMs.
"If we don't take Greenland Russia or China will go in there". 🙄Then THEY will have triggered Article Five and be at war with NATO (and us). How about the president point that out? Russia and China don't want that. They don't want WW III,They want the president to torpedo NATO.
Yesterday, I had the honor of delivering this eulogy at Daniel’s funeral. With the family’s permission, I’m sharing it here so that those who couldn’t attend can read and remember him.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all members of the chess community who came together to honor Daniel’s life. Your presence and support meant so much to his family, friends, and all of us who loved him.
There is much more I’d like to say about Danya and the impact he had on all of us, which I plan to share in a later tribute.
- THREAD🧵
I'm sorry, but you can't just pretend that @chesscom didn't make some very horrible, unfair, and insensitive decisions regarding Danya during his toughest period. I will talk about those issues today in this thread as many are unaware.
Daniel's smile faded after the attacks began. We all saw it. The chess world has lost one of its brightest lights - someone who made our game accessible to millions. Rest in peace, Danya. You deserved so much better. (3/3)
The Jimmy Kimmel cancellation is actually insane. He is a late night host and comic and the joke he made was hardly even edgy in today’s political culture. We are, again, in a terrible place for speech.
In my personal experience with Duolingo, I found that it isn't an education app, it's a mobile game -- it's completely ineffective at teaching languages but it's quite entertaining and it's great at making you *feel* like you're learning
In collaboration with @GoogleDeepMind and 9 partnering artist @YouTube is launching an experiment called ✨Dream Track✨ to a small group of creators. You're going to want to learn about this. https://t.co/qVBcq2yIjc
The first conversation I had with my oncologist, we were just talking about his experiences as a doctor (which...awesome, it was very good to get know him a bit) and I ended up asking if people ever decide to not follow his advice.
He said yes, and he looked very sad and then he told me that every single one of conversations are going to be with him forever.
What a very hard thing that must be...to have someone turn down your advice...to not get chemo, or exit the treatment early, only to come back and find that now the prognosis is much worse and the treatment plan much less clear.
It seemed to me that, at least in part, he felt his inability to keep them on the treatment path was a personal failure. I wish I could take that guilt away from him, because it's not his fault. We're all susceptible to simple stories that give us back a sense of control, even if it's an illusion. And sometimes people cannot be convinced...and sometimes that's deadly.
I'm very grateful that my worldview meshes well with the most effective paradigms. I didn't get that because I'm smart, I got it by the luck of my upbringing. And if ever a doctor tells you that you need chemo...there will almost certainly be people in your life who tell you that you should try alternatives instead.
You. Should. Not.
You can and should do acupuncture and restorative yoga and aromatherapy and eat less sugar and whatever other things help you. But do those things AND get the treatment recommended by your oncologist. Cancer patients have control, it's just a different kind of control than we're used to, and it can be disruptive to an identity to submit to that lack of control. But that's just...having a body, and I'm very happy that I get to have a body.
@golub That’s not actually what he says. His said that the annexation was wrong, plainly illegal under intentional law and Putin is to blame, but undoing the situation now (pre-full blown invasion) will require a complicated framework between the two countries.
