Norwegian authorities say they have uncovered large family networks that systematically obtained residence permits, and in some cases Norwegian citizenship, using false identities, nationalities and places of birth.

Most of the networks uncovered are linked to people originating from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Somalia.
Norway’s Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and police have identified several such networks, with the four largest involving between 20 and 50 people each. The earliest began arriving in Norway around 25 years ago.

One pattern identified by authorities involves Pakistani citizens claiming to be Afghans from poor villages with no family or education. Some claimed to be minors, only for authorities to later conclude they were adults who had been born and raised in Pakistan and had extensive family networks there.

Authorities also say some identified networks have links to extremist Islamist organizations or terrorist movements.
