as a math major it’s crazy to see how fast things have changed; when i had graduated none of this was on anyone’s minds (although there were hints), i feel so bad for students who have no idea what to pursue…
this was a new grad
ramp did a great job promoting from within (and giving a lill title inflation), such that it was a great culture for recruiting in what is an otherwise 'boring' category
Today, Ramp raised $1.85B at a $60B valuation.
Seven years ago, Karim and I wrote our mission on a Post-it: “Save companies time and money.”
Our mission hasn't changed. It’s just gotten bigger.
i threw 90% of my liquid net worth into google last week.. i’m not even bullish but i can’t believe these mofos are competing vs openai in models, vs tesla in cars, vs aws in cloud, vs meta in ads, vs nvidia in chips
i feel like i have to support them as the underdogs
Sergey Brin says by the time people see Gemini 4 Argon, Google is internally already using a couple of models ahead, and expects the cadence to continue to accelerate
"Yeah, I'm very excited about the cadence that we have nowadays. And if you look at even before Gemini 4, when we had Flash 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, we're starting to get onto that RSI treadmill."
"And now our researchers and the model work hand in hand to make the next version of the model. Actually, I just popped in here kind of randomly because Melvin and I were talking about the next version of the model."
"And probably by the time folks are viewing this internally, we're already using a couple models ahead. So it's just very exciting to see the progress and the cadence. And I expect it'll only continue to accelerate."
modal was such a clear talent magnet in nyc (basically some ai location-based talent arb), i remember one of their early guys hosted a weekly systems reading group and it was such a positive indicator for their eventual success
Today we're announcing that Modal has crossed $1B in annualized run rate, as well as raised a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation, led by @Accel.
Since our Series C, usage has tripled and we’ve grown more than 15x year-over-year.
We are deeply grateful to the developers and companies building on Modal. There's still so much more to build, and we can't think of a better time to be building software.
the writing reminds me of how i used to apply to everything - i used to just write in the format of a ‘college application essay’ and people would be so impressed
and while it seems like a lot of work (it was) so id just reuse them occasionally, was like magic (this was b4 ai)
On the first Thiel Fellowship application, one of the questions was: “Tell us one thing about the world that you strongly believe is true, but that most people think is not true. If this belief shapes the way you live, tell us how.”
Attached is how future fellow @zoink of @figma answered.
Our latest essay explores the defining moments that shaped the fellowship: https://t.co/gR2vdS05M8
