After my PhD in #AnimalWelfare I noticed that more could be done to bring the latest welfare research into animal industries, where it is needed most.

🔔 New paper announcement – a peer-reviewed manuscript from our founder Dr Isabella Clegg & co-authors! They've shown that it may not be enough to give dolphins only simple enrichment: the welfare benefits come when cognitive, foraging-related challenges are involved! 🧵
So far, we have implemented welfare assessments with eleven species (and counting)! Check the thread for our complete species list. How many could you name? 🐬🦍🦭
We invite you to join us for our virtual, free seminar hosted by our founder, Dr Isabella Clegg on October 11th (19:00-20:00 UTC)! We'll be discussing our scientifically substantiated Cetacean Welfare Assessment, aka the C-Well.

My take on modern zoo welfare for of large-brained, social animals: veterinary & physiological needs should always be met first.
The next step is to ensure they have daily engaging, choice-filled opportunities in the 3 Pillars of positive welfare: Social, Enrichment & Training
@SAHealth@SAHealth - we've had home quarantine approved 2 weeks ago, and haven't heard anything since but have been told we have to wait for your call. The SA COVID phone operators say it's not their department. There's no helpline. How can you leave people hanging like this?
Insightful @iwc_int data on cetacean #euthanasia allowed this valuable new paper by @RebeccaMBoys and colleagues at @MasseyUni. Also check out the second paper detailed on animal welfare science translation and applications by @izziclegg and colleagues.
A great paper exploring the relationship of agency to animal welfare, suggesting that exercising agency both feels good and helps better equip animals to cope with future challenges

Willingness to participate in training was found to be a good predictor of early changes in dolphins' health status which means it might also serve as an overall welfare indicator, though more work needed to look for more direct link to affect #UFAW2021
First up at #UFAW2021 is @izziclegg who is discussing dolphin welfare and starts off with explaining the difference between qualitative and quantitative measures of affective states and how it could be done on a large scale across multiple dolphin facilities
Have you always had questions about how dolphins are kept in zoos and aquaria? 🐬
Or, if you’ve worked at one of these facilities, are there questions the public always ask?
We would greatly appreciate your time for a 5 min survey on this topic at https://t.co/oc7vZYwAYe
At @RSPCA_official we are struggling to understand how we can go from the groundbreaking animal welfare progress of the last few weeks - not least ending live exports and primates as pets - to signing a trade deal with Australia with no protections for animal welfare.

In 2018, the team observed a blue whale in the region: the largest mammal on Earth 🐋
Thank you to @izziclegg and Patagonia Projects for capturing this amazing footage 🎥💙

I’ve arrived in Cornwall for this year’s @G7 where I’ll be asking my fellow leaders to rise to the challenge of beating the pandemic and building back better, fairer and greener.
It will be a busy and important Summit, and I can’t wait to get started.
