I got an email yesterday from the Cambridge Faculty of history (I read History and was an undergraduate at Jesus. Part read "Every year, the University runs a rigorous and highly competitive academic promotions process. We are delighted that four History colleagues have been promoted in this year’s round, recognising their outstanding contributions to research and teaching across a wide range of subject areas."
After Arday and now Farah Ahmed, am I expected to believe this? Did Arday and Ahmed succeed in a rigorous and highly competitive academic promotions process? Or do different rules apply in Education and Sociology?

And made private schools subject to business rates. This was a spite based policy. Public statement was about using the money to pay for 6500 new teachers. Labour has 1900 fewer teachers. They introduced the policy mid school year, causing huge disruption, and flooded the state sector with thousands of extra pupils. And if there aren't schools locally available forcing councils to pay to get them to schools.
If we were still in the EU, the policy would have been illegal.

How can the University and the supervisors justify the cost in loans and jobs and income foregone for these students? Wasting their lives and the time that real scholars could have dedicated?

A proportional property tax (PPT) is a wealth tax. Council tax pays for local services. With a PPT, the link with local govt is broken. How would the tax be assessed? Would it be updated regularly? How? If the Council collected the tax, would it have to hand it over to Govt? How would shortfalls locally be compensated by Govt? Would you trust central Govt to do so, or keep some of it back?

@Magister_Mondo That's what employers don't like - having to pay more. That's why immigration is so important to people in the lower wage groups. Immigrants drive down wages, and compete for entry level housing. Both squuze the working class.

Africans that marched them to the slave markets. Africans that sold them. Europeans (a) couldn't cope with (sub-Saharan)African climate and tropical diseases, (b) couldn't enforce their will on Africans until late C19th. Without Africans, no slave trade, either Atlantic or trans-Saharan.

It's worse than this. We'll generate more carbon emissions from importing the LNG, or gas from Norway than if it had been drilled out of the North Sea. And we'd generate jobs. And we'd get tax revenue. So, our net Zero fanatics will generate more carbon, and see fewer jobs and tax revenue.

@paullewismoney And when your spouse dies, IHT kicks in. And if the medals trigger IHT, what do they do? Sell the medals to pay the bill? When I die, my wife will pay 40% om my pension pot. And when she dies, our children will pay 40% on the residue = 64% tax. Not right. At all.

1. Descendants of Atlantic African slave trade are materially richer than those not enslaved by the African elites. Check out the GDP per head of Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica vs Benin, Dahomey, etc.
2. Reparations claims should be aimed at the enslavers. They took the money. Go after Nigeria, Ghana, etc.
